Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

5/6/1923 (Stockton Independent, p. 16) An enthusiastic audience listener to Rev. Tatman Friday night in the big tent on California street, as ho spoke on the Christian’s need of the Holy Ghost baptism. Mr. Tatman has been with the Pentecostal movement from tho beginning when seventeen years ago in a mission on Azusa street, Los Angeles, the signs that Jesus said would follow the believers first began to be known In this generation. Jesus said, “These signs shall follow those that believe, they shall cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues’’ Mk. 16:17. In his own vivid language he thundered, “Men came from all over the world to stop it. Long coat tailed preachers, and short coat tailed preachers, and high hat preachers, and preachers of all sorts looked on, and when they could not stop It they started to ridicule by calling us holy rollers, but we fooled them all and rolled right over all opposition. Then they said leave it alone and it will soon blow over. This time they were right for the thing has blown over all the world. This movement is of God, for it is God’s enduement of power to His believing children that they might witness of His might with signs and wonders following.” The speaker was tremendously in earnest and thrilled his audience again and again with unexpected sallies and sudden postures. He must be seen as well as heard and though this is only his second night here, already a large following of people have been attracted I to him and men are saying we | never heard it on this wise before. His subject for tonight is, “The Signs of the Times.”

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

I do not often find early Pentecostals who made reference to their Azusa street experience. Here is one example of a friend of Harry Morse who did.

It is also the only evidence that I have that connects Tatman with Azusa. Documenting who was at Azusa street is very difficult to do.

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

Aimee McPherson preached and toured in cities in California promoting healing. To a certain extent, she was a celebrity.

Others followed in her wake like Mattie Crawford and others.

Mattie Crawford preached all over the USA and was considered by some to be Oneness. But I see little doctrine in her presentation, other than healing.

2 questions: What impact did Aimee McPherson have on introducing Pentecostalism to mainstream America ? What impact did Mattie Crawford have on Oneness Pentecostalism ??

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

George Farrow penned a famous hymn, It's All in Him. But it was not the only time he penned some prose.

Here are a pair of poems he penned around the same time he wrote his famous hymn.
It was a general mixup I was in the other night,
Although 'twas not an-angry mob or rough-and-tumble fight.
And ladies, too, as well as men, were mixed up in the fray,
And were jostled here and yonder in the rough-and-tumble way.
There were laboring men with hardened hands and girls from shop and store,
And those whose locks were white with age whose laboring days were o'er.
But all took part and bumped and pushed and stumped each other's feet,
Till a bunch of football players would have found 'them hard to beat.
But this was not a free-for-all l’d have you understand,
For each must pay their little coin before they took a hand.
Oh no! 'twas not an angry mob of ruffians not by far,
'Twas just the usual evening crowd upon my homebound car.

and....

Garden Recreation

When the rainy days are ceasing and the sunny days increasing,
And the voice of lark and robin once again are heard.
When the willow buds are swelling,
The approach of spring fortelling
And all nature seems with animation sliced.
Then my muscles gel to twitching
And my fingers get to itching
And the things of shop and office seem to be of little worth.
For Im sick with garden fever and I'd be a base deceiver
Should I say I'm not in tune with mother-earth.
Some with found anticipation
Others seek diversion in a motor car or yacht.
Some ransack the nation
In their search for recreation .
But mine is waiting for me in my garden spot.
Here I find sweet relaxation
Rest from daily occupation,
time for quiet meditation
Business problems all forgot

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

When I run into something unique, I post it here. Data continues to come in about preWW2 Oneness Pentecostalism in California. But I do not post it all here.

It is sorta like working on a huge puzzle and finding where small pieces fit in.

I never did find old Gospel Tidings magazines from the 1945-1960's. Hopefully they will show up.

I figure there are more readers to the post that posters.

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

It is a place where I leave data others might find interesting. I also post things here in the hope it will generate insight from other.

Which early Oneness Pentecostal books are not on this list that I need ?

The Gospel Tidings began publication in 1942. But I cannot find anyone who has them. The Western District does not have them, nor does Christian Life College library. Perhaps Hazelwood has them, but their archive moved to UGTS and they are not as of yet open to the public.

Have you run across a reference to Andrew Urshan being at Azusa Street?
