As far as "getting their healing" - I have never known of any hearing impaired person being healed through a "deaf ministry" or a "signing performance." I know, I know, many will want to add some anecdotal tale about what their grandma said happened back "in the day" or some other third or fourth hand account. I should add... no one on AFF has ever responded to my many "skeptical" remarks about such things with actual proof.

I do believe in the miraculous. I don't believe that the healing of deaf ears has ever been the goal of any "Deaf Ministry" nor has this happened in any significant numbers.
I guess I should have elaborated by what I stated earlier. The scenario I had in mind when wondering was this: worship begins, Spirit starts to flow, the sign team then steps up and does their thing, exuberant worship follows when the Spirit moves in an even more powerful way, the preacher gets up and says his line "the Lord's in this place. If anyone needs a miracle or healing, I believe someone will receive it tonight," etc. The deaf person walks up and gets prayed for. And, low and behold, it happens -- they can hear. That's where I was going with that. Sorry I wasn't more specific.

Other than that, interesting to hear it from one who cannot hear. I certainly hope I wasn't coming across as doubting a deaf person if they said they can. I just wanted to hear it from their perspective, trying to put myself in their shoes...

I'm certain that the ladies practiced and that they even agreed upon which "sign" to use in cases where a there might be a couple of different ways to express something in American Sign language. Further, the fact that they were signing in the first place would serve as a kind of "filter" or even a "choreography" of their movements.

Was the audience deaf? Did the majority of people in the audiences even understand the ASL that they were observing? If not, then the whole thing really does fall into the category of a "performance," and a "choreographed" performance at that.

I'm not saying this to knock you down. As I've said before, I have enjoyed these types of performances in church. I'm just keen to observe the similarities between the things that OP people do and what "The World" or "Charismatics" do in their services. When you get right down to it, there is usually very little difference in what's going in the two realms.

Apologies for responding out of order (and, again, for derailing from the original post), but I found a recording of the sign team my wife was part of...

http://www.godtube.com/watch/?v=DPY6GNNX

Watching the video still brings tears to my (and my wife's) eyes. Given this particular vid was recorded at a public event, imagine it during a 6 pm service on a Sunday night -- it was quite noisy for a long period of time during and after the song.

Royal Tailor (with Jeremy Camp) tonight, here at the Allen Events Center. Anyone locally plan on being here?

Wish I could go, but I can't. I suppose the traffic will be a nightmare since it's right in the middle of a new shopping center...

Wish I was there!I will have to settle for watching the "Make A Move" music video one more time with the speakers turned up.

I never considered the sign language performances to be aimed at deaf people to begin with. Sign language is only loosely employed, usually only touching on the main words, and each movement is exaggerated for dramatic effect. It's a dramatic interpretation of a song using sign language; not much more.

Personally, I think the signing performances were pretty cool when they were fresh (as well as the dowel rod things--at least, the few that were done well). I'm kind of tired of it now, though, since everyone is doing it. What I do appreciate is the opportunity for young people to participate in something dramatic and expressive that also has the church's stamp of approval.

Yeah, I still need to watch that video. Who knows? I might latch on to it and crank my speakers up too, which I'm certainly no stranger to.

Hopefully they'll come back again. I don't think there could have been a better artist to tour with (Jeremy Camp) to get their name out as RT did. Although I'm not a big fan of JC, his lyrics are pretty deep and powerful. So, I can only imagine the spirit of worship that may have been there...

Re: Royal Tailor Band

I did a little research and found out that the frontman, Tauren Wells, of The Royal Tailer band did indeed marry a UPC pastor's daughter. Brittany Macey, daughter of Pastor Ron Macey of The Pentecostals of Royalwood in Houston.

I personally don't know anything about the church but saw a post online somewhere that it is a pretty conservative mainstream UPC church. That does make the "Make A Move" video all that more interesting.

Somebody here in Nashville told me The Royal Tailer Band went to church at The Well in Franklin which is a new church pastored by Tim Rutledge, who recently left the UPC when he started this church in the Nashville area. I have a feeling they probably have not moved to Nashville but attend there when they are here recording or for business.

I noted on the Royalwood site that Tauren's wife is also very musically talented and was the female vocalist winner of The North American Talent Search in 2007. Sounds like they ought to add her to the band.

When did Tim Rutledge leave the UPC?
