We could really get into roasting our own... One thing my husband and I have always wanted was to own our own cafe.... That would the totally awesome!

Me too. Give me fifteen years....

Re: The Need, the Bean and the Cup

I have never really been into different "flavors" of coffees... I like the many roasts but not the flavors...But I have to admit, we tried Boca Java and they have two incredible flavors.... Bananas Fosters and Surfin Safari.... I never thought I would care for a "banana" coffee but it is great... If you are into flavors, they have just about every kind of flavor and they say it's not roasted until you order it.... I have not been disappointed yet.... Just thought I'd share that with yall! It's worth trying!

Re: The Need, the Bean and the Cup

I've been roasting for several years. Get my green beans at http://www.sweetmarias.com/. On my third roaster. First one (which I loved) got "roasted" when I left it on the stove when the oven was self-cleaning. Melted. I mourned.

Second one was noisy. Don't remember and don't care how it met its demise.

Current one is OK. Not as nice as the first one, which was a manual timer dial and a cool-down button, if I recall. Ah, simplicity! Now, it's a programmable 3-phase fancy-schmancy thing. Does the job, but it's too complicated. And I don't think it circulates the beans as well as the old one, so the roast might not be as even. Dunno.

Anyway, I gotta say, home roasting, for me, is kinda hit-n-miss. Never know when it's going to turn out great or just so-so. Always better than store-bought, I suppose, and sometimes very good. But I'm still searching for that elusive perfect cup. At home, I still haven't topped my all-time favorite: a Kenya AA I bought pre-roasted (before my home roast days) at The Coffee Beanery at the mall. Oh, man that was good. Other batches of Kenya AA from there haven't even measured up. Home roasted Kenyas are very good, usually, but not the same.

One problem is availablilty. Find a good crop and next time you shop, it may not be available. Have to keep trying different beans, so you never know what you're going to get. They all have reviews on sweetmarias, but still.

I have an I-Roast. Can't find a pic, but here's the I-Roast 2, which looks about the same as mine:

Re: The Need, the Bean and the Cup

So how long does it take to roast the beans once you get started?

I think about 9 minutes, including the cool-down.
