What is sad is that this should be a slam dunk election against one of the worst candidates the Democrats have ever run. Unfortunately the Republican Party abandoned Reagan conservatism a long time ago, like around 1988. We had a flash of the glory days of Reagan with Newt Gingrich and the Republican revolution of 1994. But really the GOP is not much better, maybe slightly, and the Democratic Party. Ever since Reagan, we have had to deal with candidates like Dole, McCain, and Romney. George HW bush and George W. Bush were marginally better, conservative enough to win some elections, but ultimately did not embrace the conservatism of Ronald Reagan.
The field of 17 candidates running for the GOP nomination failed to offer a really good candidate to run against Hillary. Excuses can be made and blame can be assigned but ultimately conservatives failed to win the nomination. Donald Trump, as unconventional as he is, and certainly lacking conservative credentials, at least knew what significant numbers of Americans cared about. Talked about America first, our immigration problems, the anemic economy, national security in ways the others weren't.
Conservatives only have themselves to blame.
