Re: Determining which biblical laws apply today.

If the sabbath was something the early church considered important for gentiles to keep, it would have been included in the ruling of the council of Jerusalem.

Right, and it would have been taught for chapters.

There was no need to discuss something that everyone agreed upon.
you do not see them debate the Oneness of God, do you?

and to answer Bro. Blume, yes the Sabbath was taught for chapters in the Old Testament and some in the New Testament.

Can your share where the New Testament teaches sabbath-keeping?

Especially since the debate was to do with circumcision and the laws of Moses. And Sabbath keeping was a part of the laws of Moses.

"But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses."

There for to say, "There was no need to discuss something that everyone agreed upon" is moot. Sabbath keeping was part and parcel of the whole debate.

I've yet to see a sabbath-keeper truly answer that question.

Re: Determining which biblical laws apply today.

Paul and the other writers of the NT were so explicit in their understanding of how a believer was to live, laying out very explicit teachings on very simple subjects, that I cannot understand why Paul never wrote "and don't forget to keep the Sabbath as unto our Lord" or something to that effect - somewhere in his writings - but it just isn't found. He says, love your brother, let him that stole steal no more, be ye kind to one another, bear ye one another's burdens, etc. etc. ... yet not once a simple word about remembering to keep the sabbath.

Very good point.

Re: Determining which biblical laws apply today.

I've had very long discussions with those who believe following the Law is for today. When presented with the above, they simply say - everyone understood it to be so, and they will not budge from that point. It is an impasse, so to speak. Generally when we get to that place in the discussion, we end up agreeing to disagree.

Re: Determining which biblical laws apply today.

i wonder if a valid reflection might be "are we condemned to hell for not keeping the Sabbath?" no--but are there still benefits to keeping the Sabbath? And even rewards? Then ones answer might be 'yes.' Interesting to note that Sabbath will be kept in the New Jerusalem. Strangely, a deciding factor for me was when the potus made Saturday "small business day." why pick that particular day, i wonder.
