I posted this in another thread on baptism, but wanted to bring it to the attention of this thread also.
It is the consensus of many that the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus is the gospel, and repentence, baptism, and infiling of the Holy Spirit are the first actual steps towards salvation.
How do we reconcile the gospel and the steps of salvation to this verse in
1 Cor. 1:14-18?
14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
Why did Christ not send Paul to baptize but to preach the gospel?
Is not baptism part of the gospel?
This is the one scripture that has always presented a problem for the "necessity" of baptism to be saved, in my opinion.
Thoughts?
