This is absolutely true, in my experience. I'm on numerous message boards with people from Canada and Australia, and 100% of them say that they are extremely pleased with their health care system. I've not come across one single person who said they are unhappy in any way. They tell anecdotes of sickness they or family members have experienced, and tell of the treatment... quick and well done.
We really need to stop using the "Canada's health care stinks" argument. For every anecdote you can find detailing a bad experience in Canada, you can find one here in America, stemming from insurance companies. Just as many people are denied treatment, or the treatment is delayed, because of insurance companies.
We can find plenty of horror stories right here in America. I'm a horror story. If I find a lump in my breast tomorrow, I will stay home. I have no health insurance, and don't have enough money to even begin to pay for the testing.
I don't know what the answer is, but we need to start arguing 'just the facts' and quit trying to use the argument that Canada's health care system stinks. Most of its residents don't think so.
Excellent post!!
Honest to goodness, I don't have the answer either, but I think the scare tactics and Canada argument are politically based, and way out of hand.
It's time to kick agenda to the curb and forget the 'party line', lay our distrust of Mr. Obama aside, and DO something beneficial for Americans everywhere!!

Great post.
I don't have any dog in the American healthcare debate.
America undoubtedly has more guns than Canada and may even have a superior healthcare system.
But it irks to no end when Americans condemn and criticize a healthcare philosophy and healthcare delivery that Canadians are proud of.
I can't imagine living without healthcare coverage. If my wife, mother, or grandmother find a lump today they will receive immediate tests and treatment, and I am thankful to be able to say that.
I thought the uninsured don't get medical attention Mike? Isn't that the big sales pitch? Uninsured people get denied and die because the greedy CEOs are "rationing" care? Which is it? Your stories are changing! Now you're saying they are getting care and bills go unpaid. I thought the mean old hospitals and HMOs are turning people away at the door when they find out they don't have health insurance.
This is the problem. Your side wants this govt controlled industry so bad and you all won't consider anything else as a solution to some of the problems we have, you'll say anything to justify something that the founding fathers would have never supported remotely.
The truth is people, even the poor and uninsured get medical attention because our medical practitioners by and large live by the Heppocratic Oath.
Once again, an oversimplified account of medical care in this country. It's not an either or situation. As Barb and Antipas have pointed out, when someone is involved in a trauma situation(car wreck, work accident, etc..) or just want to be triaged for a cough or some minor medical issue, they're seen in an ER. As someone pointed out, that's the most expensive option they could chose and many uninsured never pay the ER/diagnostic test/hospital bill.
People with long term conditions like asthma, autism, diabetes, cancer, etc..., can't simply go to an ER for treatment every month and be treated for long term conditions. Many are denied care for these long term conditions if they don't have insurance.
Deacon, you're fooling yourself if you think that the poor and uninsured get adequate healthcare at the hands of charitable doctors. Again, I'd encourage you to go to your local hospital and talk to ER nurses and other employees if you want a more realistic view of healthcare in this country.

What irks me is to see people who have no clue how the Canadian Healthcare system works bashing it and scaring people just for political reasons. It's politics as usual by those on the Right who want to protect the status quo in this country.

I'm a conservative, but I agree that this Canada stuff is scare tactics. (both sides use scare tactics)
I'm not sure what the best answer is for health care, but something needs to be done. The whole litigation, insurance costs, health care costs, pharmaceuticals.... it has all gotten completely out of hand. Health care is simply not affordable for a good portion of our country.
My husband has health care through his job, but we can't afford to add me on to it. Way too many people are in my situation. My dad has coverage through V.A., but my mom has none. She's not been to the doctor in years. I could go on and on naming people who can't afford coverage, that I know personally.
I believe in living within my means. I don't have an expensive car or expensive house. I bargain shop. I buy things on clearance, and look for great deals. But you can't buy an appendectomy from a thrift store. You can't buy a second-hand major surgery. I can't "live within my means" when it comes to major health care, because the first pill they gave me would shoot me right out of my budget.
I would be thrilled to death if this country could somehow come up with a way to make healthcare affordable for everyone.

It has to be done. I'm not saying it has to be done by the first of the of the year because it needs to be right and not just a fast solution. I really believe that if they take their time and debate the issue minus all of those who simply don't want to do anything, they can come up with a better way.
62% of the bankruptcies filed in 2007, were related to medical expenses. The more important aspect is the people who die every year of diseases who simply don't go to the doctor because their uninsured. America is better than that.

I think they're moving way too quickly on this bill.
You do have a problem with the 'insured' not understanding what a problem this is. On another message board I frequent someone posted a poll wondering if anyone knew anyone in real life who was not insured. Because she did not. She thought that pretty much everyone had insurance, and the issue was blown way out of proportion.
Uhmm.... no. I probably know more uninsured people than I do insured. And these people aren't choosing to be uninsured while they drive Cadillacs. They simply have to choose between insurance or food. It's a problem. A real one.
We hear all this talk about the economy being in a desperate situation,
and NOW we're supposed to believe that this gov't somehow has a way
to afford to help EVERYONE with healthcare? I don't buy it., I think
things should stay as they are. PERIOD., if it ain't broke (I don't believe
its as desperate {talk about SCARE tactics} as some say either),
I for one am as tired of hearing about how bad this nations system is.,
as some are of hearing that Canada's situation is grim.
I just know that there must surely be better ways to handle any socalled
health care crisis but that might ruin the plans of those in power whom have ulterior motives for CHANGE, changes that will rob us of even more freedoms.
*sigh* BUT..enough about that., I can only keep praying that my LORD
fixes everything as He sees fit, as He has been known to do.

Sometimes the manner in which certain people in power choose to make changes, do it,
causes even bigger problems, [scarier still is the prospect of that being built-in] I don't want to go there.

There are people who DIE because they are uninsured and can't get the help they need...how much more desperate does it have to be for you to believe the system needs fixing?!
