Fit in with who??? How many years ago was this? lol
With the "Pentecostal" culture, I guess....Mainly with my sister-in-laws - all of whom dressed like that. They even dressed like that on Wednesday night church. It was fine for them, but not for me. Hmmm, probably about 20 years ago or so.
Years ago I wanted so hard to fit in with the "denim and tennis shoe look with matching blouse and socks" ...I tried to make myself wear those little Keds tennis shoes and socks to match my blouse along with a denim skirt.
I went to WalMart one time like that and felt as though everyone was staring at me. I felt stupid and I wouldn't try to make myself fit in like that again. I've never worn those colored socks except to sleep in 'em...The Keds tennis shoes are still almost like new. The denim skirt is now a size or two too small.
I don't have a pair of keds now.
Last year when I had an accident I bought a pair, but as soon as I was able to wear my shoes again the keds were thrown away.

Well, style has definitely changed in the last 20 years, there are some people I know who haven't changed thier style... both in the "Pentecostal" circles and outside of them. I haven't worn socks in sneakers with my regular outfit since I was in elementary school.
