Border security is a totally different issue than immigration. It is Congress' domain to take care of US immigration policy. The federal government mandates education (Plyler v. Doe) and entitlements for immigrants living in this country, which along with other policies ties the hands of governors.

This is what Governor Perry has done in Texas concerning border security.

1. Championed a Voter ID law that ensures only American citizens will be able to vote in elections.
2. Signed into law a requirement that only citizens and legal residents may obtain a driver’s license.
3. Declared legislation outlawing “sanctuary cities” an emergency item in Texas, and added it to the call of the 2011 special session.
4. Signed into law tougher penalties for those who engage in human trafficking.
5. Signed a law that requires counties to assist the state in tracking the number of illegal immigrants in Texas county jails.
6. Protected a Texas law that prevents any public agency, taxing jurisdiction or economic development corporation from receiving public subsidies if they have been found to have hired undocumented workers.

Perry has pushed the sanctuary city legislation this year because it is the first year we have had a republican super majority in the house...couldn't get it considered in previous years.

The bill contains three main parts: a prohibition on [Previous Hit] sanctuary [Next Hit] [Previous Hit] cities [Next Hit] , required use of secure communities, and statutory authority for DPS to authenticate lawful presence when issuing state identification (IDs) or driver's licenses.
