I wonder if the defenders of this guy would be so quick to defend if he was a UC pastor.
Considering I don't know the guy or his position on anything I cannot be defending him based on what he is or is not.

Yeah, I probably won't.

And for the record, I'm not a prude when it comes to cussing. It's not a hot button for me. (Unlike my husband who cannot STAND cussing.) For me, it just pretty much goes in one ear and out the other. I'm around people who cuss all day long at work. I don't suck in my breath sharply to let them know I'm offended. I don't even blink, it's just not a big deal to me.

But there are still lines which our culture has drawn. My boss cusses. But if we had a meeting, and he looked at everyone and said - Turn to the person next to you and say 'F U' to them - he'd more than likely get fired. Even if he had some great point he was trying to make. Rightfully so. Some lines don't need to be crossed, no matter how marvelous the point you're trying to make. There are other ways to make the point.

There were other ways than human sacrifice that God could have saved us too... but he decided it was the best way...

So don't count on there being a better non-line crossing way before you have tried to find one.

That's not very good logic. I'm not even sure how to respond to it.

I went through a really bad time, when someone hurt me in the worst way. I went through a very dark time trying to forgive. Trust me, if someone had told me to say 'F U' to that person.... well, if I did, I sure wouldn't have meant I forgive you!

I found a place of forgiveness. But I didn't get there by saying FU.

The sermon was a joke. I'm amazed but not surprised some here defend it.

I don't think he meant for them to go on about their daily lives saying F U to people. I don't even think he meant for them to literally text their exes and say F U. I do think what he did was a great way to remind people that are getting ready to or just cussed someone out that they should have been thinking about forgiveness. I do think what he was talking about even goes beyond the F word. It applies to anger in general. And so what he was saying is that when you find yourself getting really angry... even to the point you might think of the real F word remember forgiveness instead.

I chalk it up to lack of wisdom, personally. He was obviously trying to be humourous, but I think it was unwise, myself.

I don't think his main point was to be funny and if you think it was then I can see your concern. But surely you'll give him the benefit of thinking he's not so dumb to say what he said lightly in church. Surely you will give him the benefit of thinking he had to be doing more than just trying to be funny by that?
