""When visiting a foreign country, it is an admirable international manner to follow the country's own protocol," he said.
"It should be praised and never deserve criticism. In Japan, bowing never means the person underestimates himself.""
To be perfectly honest with you, this kind of outcry illustrates why the conservative movement is doing so poorly amongst younger people and I think it is unfortunate. Most younger people could care less about the stiff protocol and what something like this symbolizes. He touched the queen and gave her an ipod...most younger people would say "great". He bowed to another person, most younger people do not see that as a concession that the other country is superior and I'm telling you that that protocol is not something that we would get all bent out of shape about.
Personally, I could care less if he curtsied in the light of all the real and pressing issues we are facing. I just hope that the GOP will wake up and quit trying to make a federal case out of trivialities because it does not register with my generation.

Reason: There's a "v" in trivialities

You make a good point!

I think your right on your overall statement here. Though giving the queen an Ipod was stupid and somebody dropped the ball on that (I doubt Obama chose the gift).
Many people don't really get that the coexist bumber sticker really does symbolize the younger generation, and that applies to politics as much as it does to religion.

I don't think that many on the right appreciate the depth of the cultural/generational disconnect they are creating when they get all worked up about stuff like this. Overall, younger people could care less about traditional protocol. Something like this would be akin to not wearing a suit to preach. It just doesn't mean the same thing to everybody, and it certainly does not warrant the kind of attention it is getting in light of the real and important issues we should be discussing.

And this is exactly why I'm no longer a registered republican. The final straw for me was the Trent Lott/Strom Thurmond fiasco. First, Lott says, "Things would have been much different if Thurmond would have been elected president", knowing FULL WELL that Thurmonds main platform was complete segregation. He KNEW Thurmond was a towering champion of opposing civil rights.
But that's not what got me....it was the aftermath. Sure enough, EVERY conservative talking head....Limbaugh, Hannity, etc.,.....tried to defend Lott. They wouldn't budge.
I thought, "Wow, these people don't get it. They're completely out of touch with the real world. Why in the world could they try to excuse that?"
I find myself still leaning toward conservative ideals but being completely frustrated with conservative mindset and stra-tee-gery.
A little ps......Pres. Bush was actually one republican that condemned Lott's statement.

Anyone who has seen me post for a while, particularly during the election, knows that one of my biggest problems is with the blind partisanship that is just so prevalent among the people and the talking heads.
Having said that and having recognized the huge problems created by a two-party system with blind and unconditional support and not much accountability, there is something infinitely worse...a country in which there is only one viable and relevant party. That is where we are headed if the right does not wake up and realize that what rallies their older base does nothing for the younger voters.

Well said. As we often witness, perception is more important than reality. And the perception is, conservatives are mostly white, bigoted homophobes who want to stick it to poor people. And while that does describe some conservatives, I don't think that's conservative thought as a whole. I'm a white (sorta) conservative and there's no louder voice of civil rights than I, and I know there are many conservatives who are the same. But we're not the "Conservative" that America sees, especially young America.
And we can blame Hollywood and the media all we want, but the blame...in my opinion.....lies firmly at the doorstep of conservative leaders and talking heads. Rather than combatting the publicity problems, they just compound the publicity problems by not condemning Limbaugh for his "I hope he fails" stuff. Limbaugh has a good explanation for it, but the cat's already out of the bag....he said something stupid no matter how good his explanation. And when he happens to be the same guy who said the idiotic stuff about Donavan McNabb, we (conservatives) just end up all looking like racist hicks again.
