Re: Something I watched today
Jesus could've easily just said "holster yer weapon" and left it at that. But He told us why He said it, imo. ...shall perish with the sword"

Re: Something I watched today
Then why wouldn't Jesus have wanted Peter to "perish fighting for the kingdom of God"? He told him to put away his sword or else he'd surely die by the sword.
Do you believe it is a good thing to "perish by the sword" in this context?

Re: Something I watched today
Im probably wrong, but I've always seen a connection in these verses.
Genesis 9:6 Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God made he man.
Matthew 26:52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword

Re: Something I watched today
I wonder if Peter had a license to carry that sword?

Actually, I think the Romans did not attempt to license weapons carrying. Slaves were usually disarmed, of course, but freemen were assumed to have a right to keep and bear arms, though probably not using that particular terminology.
Remember, a license is permission to do what would be illegal without the permission. Licenses grant privileges, whereas rights cannot be lawfully licensed.

Re: Something I watched today
Peter's "sword" was more like a knife, used by fishermen, to clean and fillet a catch. It wasn't some Highlander katana or Viking Iron Long Sword, or Scottish Claymore.
The reason Jesus told Peter to put his weapon away was because Peter was, in that very moment, attempting to subvert the will of God for the Son of God, which was to fulfill all that was written of Him in the Law, the Psalms, and the Prophets, i.e. to go to the cross, die, be buried, and then, be resurrected.
Essentially then, anyone who would use violence as a way to counter, or worse, enforce the perceived, but not actual will of God in Christ Jesus, will reap what they sow.
This verse speaks nothing of self-defense, embracing pacifism, or etc. It was spoken by the Lord in a VERY SPECIFIC context, that must be remembered at all times.
Had Peter continued to slash away, one of the temple guards would have either run him through or bludgeoned him beyond saving, thus fulfilling Christ's words.

Re: Something I watched today
I disagree. Jesus is specifically speaking about self defense in this context and here is why we can know that He follows up with 53Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?
To me Jesus is saying if He needed a defense here He would've prayed for twelve legions of angels, not take up a sword.
