In isaac (then Jacob/Israel) the promise was carried forward.
The bondwoman and her son were cast out because he (Ishmael) was not to be an heir with Isaac. The covenant of the land was given to Abraham, then Isaac, then Jacob as an everlasting covenant (Psalm 105:8-12)

The seed of Abraham refers to the seed according to promise = Isaac. Ishmael is a product of Abraham's seed, but he was not the son of promise, he is the son of disobedience.
