I figured, one must not only pray out loud, but there was much greater when many worshipers prayed very loud at the same time. Surely the level of fervency spoke to their power and standing with God, I reasoned.
Long story short, I no longer believe this. I actually prefer a more orderly approach where meaningful thought is given to what said. I even practice "silent prayer" very often now.

I've pretty much gathered that about you over the years, since you enjoy Lutheran services. I don't think there is anything wrong with that at all. I have always prayed both out loud and silently. I heard a some UPC preacher say once that you had to pray out loud. I always thought that was ridiculous, seeing as God knows the thoughts and intents of the heart.
I have shamefully scoffed at the heartfelt prayers and outreaches towards God of many. I just don't want to do that anymore. I have been humbled over the years as well. It is not my decision how people should pray.

Right.
I would not judge in reverse today. It's just that my preference has changed. The honest truth... the loud and noisy type services tend to cause me to disconnect intellectually, and very often make me sleepy. I take responsibility for this, and full well realize if I was flipping myself I would solve the issue.

I think God loves that communion when it's just us and Him. But I think there is a time for collective prayer, also.

Amen. I do agree, but at this point I think I question whether collective prayer is necessarily loud or even verbal.

I was not speaking of loud, but aloud, as when we are praying for others together.

Re: I Was Wrong!
Loud or silent, I don't think it matters.
Humble prayer matters.

You sound like my son. I want no noise at all. I wear ear plugs. (Not at church. LOL!)

I haven't been a part of a loud prayer meeting where many are praying at once, in many years, and I don't miss it for a second. Where did that ever happen in the bible, anyway?
