Charlotte is my wife's city, I really do not like this place. But don't get me started on Charlotte. If you grace us out of "Zion" on occasion, let me know and I will host you for lunch and then visit you in Zion!!
Zion was the North Carolina Mountains. I am in Egypt (Knoxville, TN) now. HAHAHA!!!
Like I said, I had never heard of this person before, but in scrolling his site I did see something about a $100 "donation" for the shawl. That is very typical for what's out there today as they have a myriad of reasons that they can't sell for profit.
We are all sophistcated enough to know that this is IRS rules--what is sold must be taxed. What is given away for donation is different. Same way with any tape or book minstry in our churches. If you sell retail than you better collect sales tax. That is why many ask for a "suggested donation." On the BB broadcast I just watched they were selling Bishop Patterson's DVD for a $20 donation, CD $15 etc. ---same principle as the prayer shawl. Those "shawls" are about $40 wholesale---I have bought them before. He is making about $50 per shawl that is sold/donatation.
He does not "sell" the oil. Only offers it free in the mail as a point of contact for your own prayer. Same thing so many other ministers do--he just adds the red food color to the oil. It just helps some peoole with their faith. I really do not see the harm. If you believe it will work for you. If you do not believe---it will not work. Just like anything else. I prayed for 100 people this morning and put oil on them--what is so different in obeying James 5:14 and what he does??? I can do it face to face, but he is on TV and send oil thru the mail.
Sounds too Catholic to me! The early church didn't need "points of contacts" for faith...they just demonstrated it!

U3, I was not talking about sophistication or why they term it as a "suggested donation". I do understand that if they did not have those tax concerns that they would just advertise that it costs $19.99. My point is that I am more concerned about people doing it for money than using a "point of contact" as a principle. I'm not sure that Peter would have done it that way.

Well, I think you are wrong. Just my opinion. The church certainly did use anointing oil, James 5:14-15 says to for the elders of the church and let them "anoint" with oil. The point that you question is the oil being a "point of contact." I think so. What other purpose does the anointing with oil serve? Surely, you do not think that there are healing qualities in the oil itself?
Second, what about the prayer clothes that were taken from the body of Paul (actually handkerchiefs and aprons) and given to the sick and demon possessed. Did the clothes somehow retain an anointing from being on the body of Paul, or were they a "point of contact"? I think possibly both, they had a lingering healing anointing from being in contact with the apostle and they were a "point of contact."
Why is what this man is doing any worse than what LS promoted?
Both promise phenomenal results rooted in faith in inanimate objects rather than Jesus Christ.
Did Mark say he approved of this? If he did I missed it.
