We spent quite a lot to go to a luau, and the show was great, but the food was not so hot. You definitely pay for the show! It all depends on what your priorities are.

Don't take a full day to drive the road to Hana that everyone talks about. It's a three hour curvy road and the scenery is lovely, but once you get there, there is absolutely nothing to do there except grab a burger and head back. It takes up pretty much a whole day.

Be sure to visit Lahaina - the shops and restaurants are great. Also, eat at Roy's in Kahana!!! It's fantastic! We ate at all the local joints, but Roy's is definitely the best place on the island. It's better than the Roy's restaurants on the mainland by far; it's the original location, I believe.

I will make a note of it. I have been told to NOT schedule the Luau on the cruise ship as they are quite expensive. I was advised to get off the ship and then find a luau. Is that sound advice from your experience?

We went to a luau on Maui. The food was fantastic - except for the poi. You gotta try it, but don't expect much. It reminded me of eating wallpaper paste. But it IS a native dish, so.......... The entertainment was good tho.

I agree with Sherri. Don't bother with the drive. The road is way too curvey. It's way too long. There's nothing there once you get there. But if are determined to make the trip, spend the money to do it on a tour bus because the guide on ours was absolutely loaded with information that we would not have had if we had driven on our own. If you tend towards car sickness - don't even bother going. It's a guarantee! 9-bagger for me

Ask around about beaches that the locals use. They told us about one.You had to park along the side of the main road out of town and walk back through the woods to get to the beach. But once you got there, it was a beautiful cove! The water was fabulous. And since our point was to go snorkeling and there were lots of fish life there, it was perfect. There was probably 20 other people there the day we went.

Do check out the art galleries in town. Especially look for the Wyland gallery. VERY pricey, but nice stuff. We have several of his sculptures.

Restaurants:
David Pauls (Lahaina) - this is the one that everyone will tell you to go to because it's the fanciest, most prestegious, if you want to impress someone. But our bill was $135 and the food was just average, and that's with no drinks obviously. To me, it wasn't worth the money.

Longhi's - (Lahaina and Wailea) - good for lunch or breakfast. They have a huge cinnamon roll in the morning. Been an island staple for many many years.

Moose McGillicutty's -(Lahaina) - great for cheap breakfast. You can usually pick up two for one breakfast coupons in the shops around.

Zuihao's (Lahaina) - Good Chinese type food. Kind of upscale like a PF Changs.

If you happen to dock around Wailea instead of the Ka'anapali area, there is a Roy's at Kihei down there, as well as the one in Kahana.

We ate at some other places like the Rusty Harpoon, but they all just sort of start to blend together. Nothing else that really stands out in my mind.

I forgot the name of our Luau, but it is the only one on the island that has entertainment from four different cultures so it's very interesting. The Poi is NASTY!!! But you have to eat a little because it's their cultural staple. You do get to see a sunset over the ocean while you're eating outside, so it's very romantic. If you want to take time to sit through a timeshare, you can usually get one or two free luau tickets and they are quite expensive.

We went out on a huge sailboat called the Trilogy that goes to a little island of Lanai'i. There is tons of food and drinks of all sorts on the boat and the crew is hilarious. It was a really nice day trip!

Be sure to get your picture made at the banyan tree in Lahaina at the oceanside park. The tree spreads out over like an entire block. It's massive!

I love Ka'anapali Beach the best, even though it's probably the more crowded one. There is a big cliff that people dive off of up by the Sheraton at the north end. We didn't dive, but others did!! That's the beach where the Marriott, Westin, etc. are located.

Ok, now I'm really wanting to go back!
