Re: Knowing The Terror Of The Lord

I certainl believe we should 'know our enemy'. Jesus said, "Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves."
So, the trick...is to be aware of this sinful world...but not have all our heart and mind be consumed by the fear of it....or be consumed with the task of defending from it.

That image in the common mind of "eternity" as somehow disconnected from the present, that place we'll all get to "someday;" well, as long as by "all" one means everyone who believes our version of Christ, and, no matter what, as long as by "someday" you mean not now, but later, preferably (and almost universally) after one dies. That hallucination.

And, since I like the reference, see how this places "eternity" right after "free beer tomorrow" in a mental timeline here.

Paul never mentioned the devil in this context. He was talking about the Lord Jesus.
The word in 2 Cor 5:11 means "reverence, as for one's husband." I don't think this means the kind of "terror" you are thinking..and seem to be proposing.

It's more like, "knowing the deep reverence and respect we have for the Lord we love and adore..." And...suddenly, we're back to love.

Did you happen to look the word up for yourself? It does NOT mean what you said.

Strongs word number 5401 Greek word "phobos".

It means:

to put in fear, alarm or fright, exceeding fear, fright.

When people start studying for themselves they will learn many things.

Go and learn what the "terror" of the Lord means.

Yes, actually, I did look up the word for myself. It truly is amazing what people will learn when they start studying for themselves.

Strongs word number 5401 Greek word "phobos". I'm in agreement thus far.

It means: 1. fear, dread, terror
2. reverence, respect (for authority, rank, dignity). 2 Corinthians 5:11 is referenced here, meaning this is the proper understanding of the word as used in this verse.

This is according to Thayer's Lexicon.

Jude
21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
22 And of some have compassion, making a difference:
23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,
25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

It's a two-sided sword...

Interestingly, Thayer's has a note about this usage.

"with anxious heed lest ye be defiled by the wickedness of those whom ye are rescuing, Jude 23"
