Back in the day, I learned that the Greeks and Romans didn't care much about a person's skin color--rather, it was your status: patrician, commoner (hoi polloi), freeborn, slave, freedman, that sort of thing. Skin color, not so much. I would suspect that people had darker skins than those of us who have (some) northern European ancestry. But as far as being "African," I don't know that I buy it at all.
