If that's an ear it's 3/4 down his face and disproportionate in scale to his head.

Dan, you apparently are the only one that can see that. I see no 'undergrowth'. I see an ear. I see what appears to be hair on top of his head. I see his neck. There is nothing protruding that is unusual below that 'ear'.
