Boy, this post sure brings back a lot of memories.

First, of the many tearful prayers that Wally's mom prayed at an old fashioned altar: "Please Lord, just take him back, and I'll never complain about anything ever again."

The second, about three weeks after Wally married a fine unsuspecting Christian girl, who, coming from far back in the woods didn't have much exposure to potential husbands, is the haunting memory of her plaintive wails as she begged Wally's mother: "Please take him back! I'll do anything you ask, but please take him back!"

That being said, I am all for anything we can do to get back at Wally.

Anglican Church votes against same-sex unions
Updated Sun. Jun. 24 2007 10:03 PM ET
CTV.ca News Staff

Canadian Anglican delegates meeting in Winnipeg have voted against blessing same-sex unions, despite the majority of members actually being in favour of the motion.

"The laity voted in favour, the clergy voted in favour, but it was the House of Bishops that narrowly decided not to approve the motion that was before the members of Synod," Reverend Canon Christopher Pratt, of the Diocese of Huron, told CTV Newsnet on Sunday.

"In total point of fact, there was a majority of members of Synod that voted in favour (of the motion)."

The bishops voted against the motion 21-19.

The Anglican Church does not perform weddings for same-sex couples; instead, debate focused on whether it should allow priests to perfrom blessings for those who obtain a civil marriage.

Earlier, delegates had decided that blessing same-sex unions would not conflict with the Church's core doctrine. But the final motion -- that clergy should be allowed to perform such blessings -- was defeated.

The vote came a day after delegates failed to make a decision after hours of wrangling over procedural issues.

Speakers at the annual meeting were torn over the issue and debated whether to even hold the vote this weekend.

"Sin is still sin, and to bless sin would be a disaster to our church," Rev. David Parsons, a minister for 28 years, warned attendees ahead of the vote.

"Jesus Christ is my one and only saviour, this Bible is trustworthy, and I urge you brothers and sisters to listen to it."

Others were more supportive of the blessings.

Archdeacon Karl McLean, a colonel with the Canadian Forces, said the church should bless same-sex relationships that are monogamous and committed.

"We need to consider and demonstrate God's character, God's love and justice," he said.

Canada's Evangelical Lutheran church, which is also meeting in Winnipeg this weekend, rejected same sex blessings in a vote held Saturday.

Pratt said the issue would be a source of continuing debate among clergy, despite Sunday's vote.

"I think this is going to be an ongoing discussion, as people take a look at the way in which they can effectively carry out the ministry to which they've been called at the local level," said Pratt. "And so the conversations are going to continue to go on, as people reflect on those basic elements of scripture and tradition."

With files from the Canadian Press
This recent controversy in the Anglican Church came to both a positive and a negative conclusion: The positive was that they voted not to bless same-sex unions; The negative was their refusal to condemn same-sex marriage, and the broad support for blessing same-sex unions.

I found this statement to be particularly disturbing: "Earlier, delegates had decided that blessing same-sex unions would not conflict with the Church's core doctrine. But the final motion -- that clergy should be allowed to perform such blessings -- was defeated."

Question: You know what the worst thing about Hamilton getting a professional hockey team would be?

Answer: Toronto would want to have one too!

What's new in Canada? Felicity just had supper with some wonderful friends sitting on the backyard deck of a home on a hill overlooking Belleisle Bay with the moon shining bright in the sky and reflecting off the water in the Bay, Junebugs beating at the patio door and the pastor beating a gigantic moth to death.

TB's in Maine somewhere.

The only thing better than a moonlit Belleisle Bay is the quality of the people who live on its shores, whether you're on a hill overlooking it, or in the village close beside it.

Stories like this are part of the reason why I think that Western Alienation is not necessarily a bad thing.

Two boys were playing hockey at an outdoor arena when one is attacked by a Pitbull. Thinking quickly, the other boy rips a board off the nearby fence, wedges it down the dog's collar and twists, breaking the dog's neck. A reporter who was walking by saw the incident, and rushed over to interview the boy!

"Calgary Flames fan saves friend from vicious animal," he starts writing in his notebook.

"But I'm not a Flames fan," the boy replied.

"Edmonton Oilers fan rescues friend from horrific attack," the reporter starts again.

"I'm not a Oilers fan either," the boy said.

"Then what are you?" the reporter asked.

"I'm a Maple Leafs fan."

The reporter turns to a new sheet in his notebook and writes, "Redneck idiot kills family pet."

(The Canadians aren't the only team in red)
