Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

The Arizona District of the UPC had a newsletter. In the July of 1976 issue, it had several articles of the Oneness pioneers of the Arizona District.

I wonder who had that issue ? It may have articles about Winifred Westfield or other old timers like Arthur Ross.

I found out about it today in a book by Mary Wallace entitled " Old Time Preacher Men".

No one in the book was a Morse student. This book focussed on midwest and southern men and women.

I did have the granddaughter of a Morse student email me with the promise of checking for old pictures. Morse stories were told by the now deceased grandparents, so there is a chance that something will come up.

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

A copy of the Winds of God by Goss came in the mail today.

No mention of Harry Morse or his Oakland Mission. It does mention Carrie Judd Montgomery.

Goss does mention being in a service in Oakland, but does not mention the church or pastor by name.

I need to gather more data...

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

The missionary Fred K Scott was born in 1915, so he was not the guy who helped Harry Morse start the mission in Oakland in 1915.

In 1939, he attended ABI.

In 1942, he moved to Portland.

So, who was the Fred Scott that was not the missionary ??

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

Just curious if you know any of Morse's family history. From what I've gathered he didn't have any children, but curious about other relatives. My mom's side is Morse.

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

Harry and Maude had no children. His sister lived in Illinois. I did not research her descendants.

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

Actually, Harriet Morse probably lived in Milwaukee when she passed away in 1959 at the age of 80. By the time of her passing, 2 of her sons had already passed, Harold John (1954) and Morse Harry (1957). William Joseph passed in 1992, and Donald Chester died in 1997.

Looks like she named one of her sons after her brother.

It also appears that one of her children is still alive. But I do not have his name- yet.

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

Sacramento Union
9/7/1908

Newspaper article describing a Pentecostal service in Sacramento, Ca.

The people of the Pentecostal faith, commonly known as the "Holy Jumpers,” still are conducting their series of meetings in their tent at Twentieth and Q streets, and while they draw in fairly good-sized audiences, a majority of the visitors go to be amused. Indeed, the people of the Pentecostal faith, judging from the meeting last night, are a peculiar people. Their faith, as explained by Scott, is the simplest form of the Christian religion. They preach a true. Godly religion; true forgiveness and justification; that the sanctified soul can open the heart irt perfect faith to God and that it will not be denied; and finally, that baptism in the Holy Ghost must be had before perfect happiness can be attained. They teach Christ, and Him crucified, and assert that it is their duty to go to all the world and preach the word of the Master. But they do it all in their own peculiar way. To a layman their methods of beginning meetings and their manner of conducting them would seem to be something in the line of the Shakers, with just a bit of Quaker cropping out at unexpected moments. The meeting is unorganized. The people of the faith talk and laugh if it suits them, and occasionally one of them will hold a session of silent prayer. Then, when the spirit moves one of them, he or she will get up and tell what is on his or her mind, and they tell it very well and very clearly, too. Their songs are in the nature of monotonous chants, conducive, to nervous people, of frenzy, hypnotism or catalepsy. Indeed, there was an exhibition last evening that savored .strongly of catalepsy and seemed to demand the attention of a physician. It is possible that it was a ca.se of hypnotism, but it is a practical certainty that it was not produced by religious fervor or frenzy. Two little girls, apparently ten and eleven years old, came forward on the rostrum and began a tuneless chant. In a few moments the oldest stretched her left arm out horizontally, and with a tottering rigidity she held it In that position for twenty minutes. Directly she dropped the chant and broke into what sounded like a string of Chinese words, and when she finally went back to her seat the spell remained upon her and she moaned and talked in English and in that other tongue—if tongue it wa.s —for a long time. At one stage of her ravings Mr. Scott announced that she was repeating in the strange language what he had said in English only a short time before. Were this true, it would indicate a cataleptic condition or something of that kind. While the meeting drew laughter from many of those present, as a matter of fact it was nearly pitiful, as far as the little children were concerned. That they were swayed by the older and stronger minds on the platform was apparent; that they should have been at home and in bed is certain. And that Chinese sounding language! Mr. Scott said it was the language that comes, untaught, to sanctified people who have received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Once that baptism takes place, they speak the tongue, though they never before heard it.”

9/14/1908 subsequent article...

“HOLY JUMPERS" ARE TONING DOWN Meeting Last Night Devoid of Spectacles That Marked Former Ones. Shaking and Jumping, Hysteria and Hypnotics Not in Evidence.
The people of the Pentecostal Faith are still at Twentieth and Q streets, and announcement was made at last night’s meeting that they would continue their meetings this week. Compared with the Sunday night meetings heretofore held, that of last night was tame. There was no shaking. no hypnotic subjects, no sudden and unexpected contraction of muscles —nothing that gave a sort of amusement to the morbidly curious who assembled to laugh. It was after the meeting had been formally closed that two nervous women who had occupied seats upon the platform in giving in their experiences, approached the hysterical stage, but they stopped short of the jumping and shaking performance. Except for the small boys, who kept up a continuous disturbance on the outside, and who ought to be looked after by the police, and the big boys who monopolized the attention of those on the back seats inside, the meeting was as decorous as an oldtime Methodist campmeeting, which it greatly resembled. Three of the men preached the gospel as they understood It. They preached Christ and Him crucified; they admonished sinners to seek repentance; they read from the scriptures. and finally they invited those who were willing to do the work of the Master to come forward and declare themselves. One of the men sandwiched in a lot of jargon that he said was Chinese, and that sounded like it. a favorite string, when unwound, being something like “Chi li hong com ah hlah kiah.” This was persistently and startlingly repeated at moments when least expected, but parties who had attended other meetings of the sect were used if and took it as a matter of course. The two little girls who a week before did a sort of hypnotic act were not upon the platform.”
