How are any of the things you mentioned comparable to preaching against outward appearances?
If we look at the first day of the church, Peter didn't point out anyone's particular sin. Instead He pointed to Jesus, the answer to their sin.

Amen!
One of my pastors once said most people know they are sinners, they just need to know they have a Savior who can deliver them out of their sin.

There is a difference in preaching against sin and specifically pointing out a sinner and condemning them.
Conviction preaching is a must. Condemnation preaching not so much.
Heaven and hell and what will get you into each needs to be preached. Putting an individual in hell is Jesus' call.
