Re: *Myles Young's Departure from the UPC*
Well, I personally like Brother Young. I do not know him well but he did preach for us in Brazil and we had an awesome time.
I did go to a meeting at their church once and enjoyed it very much. I was not a speaker just a visitor. However my nephew and his family are members there and my sister in law.
I personally think of him as a very intelligent pastor and a very kind person.

One of our parents was NOT 'in the church'; therefore, we had a TV. This practice by both Myles and Monte, continued well after both graduated from high school. We were sworn to secrecy to not let their dad know, being the unrealistic and very controlling affect he had over his family and his parishioners. Sadly, this behavior by most Pentecostal clergy is considered acceptable; however, dysfunctional as it is. For most Pentecostal PK's (preacher's kids), it's a life of double standards. Therefore, it's NO surprise to me that Myles met and married Rev. Nathaniel Wilson's daughter, Sheliah. Rev. Wilson was ,and still is, as controlling as Myles' dad over his congregation. The difference between Louisiana Pentecostals and California Pentecostals is different. Louisiana Pentecostals have had ENOUGH of 'being controlled' and California Pentecistals are still learning this inappropriate clergy behavior. There are exceptions here, though. So, I'm quite certain that the lure of one day inheriting a successful Pentecostal church with a well known pastor within all of the Pentecostal organizations, was stronger than Myles' more liberal convictions. Myles is a good guy but knowing him since his father became pastor of the First UPC of Baton Rouge, I doubt his extreme conservative convictions are genuine. I'm sure it's more of the 'double standard' that he grew up with. I wouldn't be surprised if Myles is passing the same behavior on to his own children. Of course with Rev. Wilson still 'in charge', it can be assumed it will be business as usual. I'm an original Louisiana Cajun and I call it as I see it! Keeping it 100% real....

There are plenty of young men in old time Pentecost who "sow their wild oats" then become carbon copies of their father's when they enter ministry. The sincere ones probably look at their youthful indiscretions as just a period of rebellion they went through and now they are "right with God".
I am also sure there are a few cynical ones who are probably still liberal at heart but want to continue the "family business" so perpetuate the control and legalism.
I have never heard Myle's intergrity questioned so I will assume he is one of the latter.

I'm old...am I reading this correctly? Are you saying he is pastoring TRC and preaching as he does just to maintain "the family business?"

Not one of my best statements. I really don't know. The point I wanted to make was that I have never heard of his integrity being questioned. I don't know him personally but have never heard anything bad about him.
I do think many younger men will, out of respect to their father or spiritual elders, not fully follow the path they would like to as it would be met with disapproval or disappointment at best and possibly estrangement at worst.
Some of these men will perhaps make some adjustments over time as they become their own men in leadership positions and those they were seeking to please pass on but others will follow others paths so long it becomes their own. I am thinking in particular of a very prominent UPC pastor I feel this is what happened with and another who did in mid life break away from his father's path ((and is suffering the slings and arrows for it). I will not be specific as to who I am talking about but it isn't very hard to figure out. The first is himself now reaching retirement age at the church he inherited from his father and the second recently left the UPC after being castigated for moving his blue blood old school historic UPC church in a large urban area in a liberal direction.

Exactly! And to say that underneath that conservative facade is a liberal crying to break free, or that his role as SIL to Bishop Wilson means he live a certain way...why that's just silly and unfair.
|
No it is not silly and unfair. I know of several pastors that held or still hold conservative stands because of the fallout that would come from family and peers if they let down their standards!

Worse than being unfair, it calls into question his very character...

No it has very little to do with his character, it has to do with fear of being ostracized by family and peers, which by the way is a very legitimate, fear.

And I know several "liberal" pastors who have expressed their wish to get back some of the things they have let go.
But they cannot see how to do it without losing their church.
However, I would not speculate about this on a public forum.

Who cares about a license? To bad Jesus or the first apostolic preachers couldn't preach at a UPCI church. They don't have a license. It is sad this is what the Body of Christ has come to.

One doesn't have to be a licensed minister to be allowed to preach in a UPC (or any other denomination's) church, so long as the pastor permits it. One DOES have to be a licensed minister to BE a pastor in a UPCI affiliated church. The same holds true for virtually any denomination out there. And that's a good thing, as it ensures those pastors are adhering to the same doctrines as the rest of the organization.
