What is this scripture saying if not separation from the world?

Yes we are separated from the world and unto God. However, we live in the world and cannot disassociate ourselves from sinners if we want to win them. Though we are in the world we are not "of" the world. We do not partake of the things the world does i.e. worldly entertainments, movie theatres, dances, gambling etc.

There's still some "unclean" things that we are to separate ourselves from.
There is a remnant that still holds to truth.

Barb gave an excellent answer.

I believe that being separate is about our actions towards others like Jesus. Loving one another. Now that would separate you from the world don't you think?

Perhaps even separate some from the church.

IF we could just obey that one scripture ALL would be well.

We are in the world but not of the world... We can be with them, but be different than they are...

God has always had a people that were different.

The "difference" is the work of God.

Ex 11:7

7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.KJV

Different in their concept of God... ONE GOD.

Deut 6:4
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
KJV

Different in their life style.

1 Peter 4:1-4
1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
KJV

Read the prayer of Jesus in John chapter 17 where it speaks of "the world" and His relationship with it and the relationship of His people with it.
The way I understand "the world" it is from the Greek word kosmos which means orderly arrangement or to set in order. It refers to the way this world (not the earth or planet or globe) is set up or the way it operates. Mankind has a whole way of being and acting and governing and interacting without God. Our educational system, our media, our philosophies, our conduct is from a humanist viewpoint and excludes the idea of God. God is left out. He is not a factor. Everything is viewed from the mind of the "natural" man. The idea is to take care of ourselves, please ourselves, live for the now because there is no eternity and no God to whom we must give account. There is no right and no wrong, only as we perceive it. To be different from the "world" is to believe in a God who created us, visited us, redeemed us, revealed Himself in His Word, and wants to be number 1 in our viewpoint. A person who is "worldly" lives for the here and now. A person who is not worldly lives for eternity and orders his life around the ideals presented in the Scriptures. A person who is not worldly lives by the Spirit and not by the flesh.

Copied and Pasted from another forum: QUOTE:

Waiting on the World to Change

This song is very popular and at my job they always have one radio or another blaring. It seems this is always playing.I asked my friend at work about it.She says its very popular.
I thought on the words and how people want hope but the
truth is the world will never change in the way they want
it to.They want a perfact world here on earth without self
change.God however offers us a new life and a new hope far
removed from worldly choices or values. We have to face it
the world is the world and the bible says not to love the world
nor the things of the world. If you do the love of the Father is not in you.lv sis.c
