I ASKED THE LORD THAT I MIGHT GROW
Words: John Newton, Olney Hymns
I asked the Lord that I might grow
In faith, and love, and every grace;
Might more of His salvation know,
And seek, more earnestly, His face.
’Twas He who taught me thus to pray,
And He, I trust, has answered prayer!
But it has been in such a way,
As almost drove me to despair.
I hoped that in some favored hour,
At once He’d answer my request;
And by His love’s constraining pow’r,
Subdue my sins, and give me rest.
Instead of this, He made me feel
The hidden evils of my heart;
And let the angry pow’rs of hell
Assault my soul in every part.
Yea more, with His own hand He seemed
Intent to aggravate my woe;
Crossed all the fair designs I schemed,
Blasted my gourds, and laid me low.
Lord, why is this, I trembling cried,
Wilt thou pursue thy worm to death?
“’Tis in this way, the Lord replied,
I answer prayer for grace and faith.
These inward trials I employ,
From self, and pride, to set thee free;
And break thy schemes of earthly joy,
That thou may’st find thy all in Me.”

I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.
(My two favorite stanzas are in bold. I have never heard anyone sing these 2 and can't understand why.)

Still Go Free
As performed by the Hinsons
Verse I
Lock me up in a prison, and throw away the key
Take away the vision, from these eyes that now can see
Deprive me of the food I eat
You can even bind my hands and feet
But as long as I have Jesus
Then I can still go free
Chorus
That I could still go free
What kind of man, would reach down His hand
And do this for me?
Unworthy to live, and not fit to kill
Then a man on the cross, put me in his will
And said that I could still go free
Verse II
Now I never could quite understand
Why a King would want to leave His throne
To dawn the robes of an earthly man
Feel the pain of flesh and bone
And to later trod, trod a lowly path
That led to Calvary
Where the blood washed stains
Broke all the chains
So that I could still go free
Repeat chorus then,
And said that I could still go free

The Love of God
Frederick M. Lehman, 1917
1. The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.
* Refrain:
Oh, love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
The saints’ and angels’ song.
2. When hoary time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call,
God’s love so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—
The saints’ and angels’ song.
3. Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.

Savior, Savior,

Let me at a throne of mercy
Find a sweet relief;

Save me by Thy grace.
Thou the spring of all my comfort,
More than life to me,
Whom have I on earth beside Thee,

He Was There All The Time
Written By: Gary Paxton
Verse I
Time after time I was searching for peace in some void
I was trying to blame all my ills on this world I was in
Surface relationships used me till I was done in
But all the while someone was begging to free me from sin
Chorus
He was there all the time
He was there all the time
Waiting patiently in line
He was there all the time
Verse II
Never again will I search for a fake rainbows end
Now that I’ve found the answer my life is just starting to rhyme
Sharing each new day with Him is a breath of fresh life
Oh what I’ve missed He’s been waiting right here all the time
Repeat chorus twice, then:
He was there all the time

I Need You More Today
As Performed By The Bishops
Verse I
There are decisions I can’t make on my own
And there are trials I must face all alone
But you said you’d walk with me
Down life’s troubled road
And you said come unto me
I’ll bear your heavy load
Chorus
I need you more today than I did yesterday
Mountains are higher, rivers are wider
I need you more today than I did yesterday
Help me remember I need you more today
Verse II
When I wake up in the morning
And I fear to face the day
Let me feel your gentle hand leading the way
Yesterday has come and gone
With those trials far behind
But I’m ever learning Lord
And everyday I find
Repeat chorus twice, then
Dear Lord remind me, I need you more today

Please Come Down To Me
Verse I
I know that I'm not worthy to call upon your name
All my life I've been a sinner and for that I am ashamed
But I heard that you would listen to I'm giving you my plea
I'm too unworthy Lord, to come to you
Could you please come down to me?
Chorus
I know that there are others who could offer more than I
I promise you I'd understand if for me you had no time
I think I've just hit bottom and I'm looking up to see
I'm too unworthy, Lord, to come to you
Could you please come down to me?
Verse II
I guess I must be reaping from the seeds that I have sown
Lord, you owe me nothing, we haven't spoken for so long
If you could spare some mercy I'll pledge my life to thee
I'm too unworthy, Lord, to come to you
Could you please come down to me?

The Shepherd's Call
Words and Music by Gerald Crabb
(1st Verse)
I wandered far from the fold where I was safe.
It wasn't long until I found I'd lost my way.
I cried with fear as the night began to fall.
One more lost lamb, but I heard the Shepherds call.
(Chorus)
He saw my steps as they walked right into the dark.
Though I went astray, I never once left his heart.
That night long ago, how I still recall.
When I lost my way, then I heard the Shepherds call.
(2nd Verse)
He left the fold to search out one that strayed.
Left ninety-nine for there was one to be saved.
There on that ledge one-step would have ended all.
I felt a hand, and I heard the Shepherds Call.
