It is mentioned most in the book of Proverbs, e.g.,

* “He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.” (Proverbs 28:7)

* “When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you, and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.” (Proverbs 23:2)

Okay. Then to follow your thoughts to a logical conclusion based on your earlier question about the beltline: Jesus would have had a rather large waistline to have been accused of being a glutton, correct?

Obviously, we would n ot think this was the case. The term "glutton" in scriptural terms does not equate necessarily to "overweight" as much as it does to "excessive."

So to answer your earlier question: No, a large waistline does not equate to gluttony. It can, but does not unequivocably. A glutton can also be rather thin.

You took the long road to get here RR.

I never stated or intended that everyone with a large waistline was a glutton, but neither does that mean there isn't a problem in Pentecost with obese men who refuse to preach against the sin of excess and gluttony.

Actually, if you would have just answered my question instead of asking a question we would have already been there.

And I do agree that there is a major problem with excess in the Church. It is not always recognizable.

It's not all recognizable, but much is and we should address what is.

Anyway goodnight. Always enjoy sparring with you, you have a great mind.

Are many afraid of the subject because of their own bulging waistline?
Is gluttony still a sin?

Must not be. Look at all the fat apostolics that are on the first train load to the...the...the great mariage SUPPER in the sky to eat for...for...SEVEN YEARS...count 'em (seven years of pigging out) before they come back and WHUP the rest of us for all OUR sins!

Come on Bro. Strange,

Please tell me that you are also not one of those who thinks that gluttony is relegated to only speaking of eating?

We do need to address much more than what we do. The problem is that we have become a church that wants a weakened pulpit. Bless us but do not challenge us. Build our faith but do not condemn our sin. Make us shout but never make us cry. Pray with me but not for me. Love me into heaven but don't preach me out of hell.

Also enjoy the sparring.

Oh no.

Over indulgence in almost anything can be gluttony. But, when you think of a glotton what is the first thing that you think of? Someone who is inclined to gorge themselves with food, right? Of course.
