Lacey, I think one of the reasons that police and law enforcement all over the world use them so extensively is that there temperament lends them to primarily be aggressive only when they need to be. From a liability standpoint they need a dog who is not a loose cannon and can accurately judge threats and non-threats...and they are very smart and trainable.

large dogs don't do good cooped up inside all day waiting to be walked. I have a friend that has a yellow lab and they lived in an apartment. I would come over every now and then to walk him.
If someone can take the dog out during the day when you are at work, then Id say go for it.
I love shepherds and husky's and they tend to be good dogs to be around when they have been trained and treated right
