If you need help understanding that women were chattle in ancient times, I'm afraid you need to go back to the most basic and simplistic aspects of the study of history.
Look, for example, at the way in which the OT patriarchs purchased their wives; and consider that Abraham and company were actually "enlightened" by the standards of their times.
Look at the way Jacob wanted to forgo revenge for the rape of his daughter just so that he could enjoy amiable relations with the family of the man who had raped her. Women were seen as property and "things" that a man might accumulate toward some end.
The Bible records Jesus addressing his natural mother in a fashion consistent with His time. The angels called Mary "woman" when they met her at the tomb. In
Matthew 15:28 - while praising her faith, Jesus calls the Canaanite woman by the same word.
I think you err when you try and and transpose 20th century English idioms into the 1st century manner of speech. To address a lady as "woman" in the first century was not an insult.
