IMO, if a person is going to use "defiling the temple" to go against a tattoo then be consistant: Don't "defile" the body with anything that creates a health risk or alters the appearance...

But again...I do not think that this is the proper context of the verses in 1 Cor. 3...

Rev. Randy, I do appreciate all your postings; they were very informative. All that said, I cannot change what has happened and neither can they, so I choose to accept and love them.
Hepatitis B vaccination is standard for children now, but there is not a vaccine for Hepatitis C. Just wanted to clarify.

What's wrong with your eyesight? Maybe you should go to the doctor...or better yet:

Expand your paradigm!
LOL..Okay, I did not see the correct usage for your sentence structure...read up on changing paragraphs when you change ideas as in when you are talking about scripture THEN move on to society in the next sentence...:sshhh

I am glad YOU brought comparing the business world with the church world here, I did this on another thread and seemingly got condescending nonsense because of the comparison...

Moderation is still a buzzword for gutlessness and it is still overused and starts my fire everytime I hear it used.

I think much of this Non-Judgemental stuff sometimes carries a high price tag..

it would seem that shame no longer matters... I was listening to a Talk Radio show (non-christian) discussing this a few days ago..

I think it has bled into the church it seems... do what ever you feel.. if it's not listed in the Bible.. I will still love you and don't worry about shame..It's covered by my love...

The more I think about this.. the more something doesn't ring true here..

Sometimes Love Costs... actions count... I hope my boys understand that Love isn't free.. Love takes a lot of work and commitment.. on the human level... and they are accountable for their actions...

(P.S. I agree with you on the health thing...if people are going to be health-conscious as a means of consecrating their bodies to God, then they shouldn't just abstain from the things that are convenient for them to abstain from.)
Short answer:

I believe Paul is referring more to the "body of Christ" and not the individual "body" or the physical body. He said, "you are the temple" in a plural form of the Greek as opposed to saying that "each one is a temple". He does not say, “you are each a temple” but “you [plural] are the temple,” with each person participating as one of the building-stones.

Paul is talking about building on the foundation and such which is a clear reference to the church or "the body of Christ'. He also talks about being "Laborers together". So defiling to body would be things such as perversion of doctrine by bringing in doctrines of men and such, jeolosy, envy, strife, discord (which is exactly what Paul was dealing with in the first verses of this chapter)...

Hmmmm...so you plan on controlling your adult children and their choices?

I don't think they're "kinda okay", but I think considering our society we are going to have to deal with people who are converted who have them (permanently), and young people who think this is a cool teenager thing to do (because they're young and somewhat foolish and of course they'll regret it later, but what teenager will believe that sentiment?).

So you can either say "That was stupid" and then move on...OR...you can...well...what were you suggesting, exactly?

I have to say...I don't believe if someone has a heart tattooed on their arm with "MAMA" scrawled across it, that its in any way connected to the spiritual world. Furthermore, there must have been exceptions (in the OT) to the markings/piercings rules, since Jewish women wore nose rings and earrings, AND the whole servant/aul-through-the-ear thing. Exodus 21:4-6
I understand the reason for the thread, although I don't agree with the text...yes, this can be likened to any other life changing mistake that a young person makes...do you stop loving them? NO Do you constantly bring it up and badger them? NO

How are these things handled? My mother got very hurt and angry when something like this would take place. When I left God, we didn't talk for three years. When I made things right with God, I approached her and we talked a long while and put everything under the blood. It was God's grace that we were able to bridge the gap. Although she shut me out...IF she had just said, "I tried, and I can't say anything to you because you are an adult now...," I would have lost any ounce of respect that I had for her beliefs. She stood strong and was able to allow God to use her to help me along...

Bottom line, hate the sin...love the sinner...don't compromise for or with the sin...do everything in your soul and intreat God's grace into your life so that you can balance that fine edge of love vs. sin without destroying your relationship...

(and BALANCE used here is not interchangeable with "failing to make a stand")

Tatooing has everything to do with spirituality no matter how "simple" one is tatooed. When someone changes God's creation, there is spiritual attatchments involved.

I think this is true of our society in general, and it does bleed over into the church, unfortunately.

Anyone who bucks the system, and the evil "government" (be it church or otherwise) is admired openly, and by some, secretly.

Emulation is sure to follow admiration.
