We JUST bought one last night. It is the Lowrance IFinder H2Oc GPS+WAAS. It has a boatload of features and since we've had it less then 24 hours as of me typing this I don't know how it will perform in the field, but just playing around the little we've been able to, we love it!
It's accuracy is to within 3 meters and upon power on, it is able to detect a signal and location in a couple of seconds -inside our house. Comes with a pretty good street map built into the unit. Allows the addition of SD cards for more way points and trails, and has a 320x240 color screen.
Oh yes, it is also water proof.

We wanted a hand unit as we intend to use it more hiking then navigating in the car -although it can do that as well.

We just got a Tom Tom 720. Has lots of bells and whistles, more than I will probably ever use.

Has large screen, bluetooth, and etc.

Haven't opened it yet. I was NOT planning on buying anything other than a Garmin, but my Hubby thought this would be better.

I have the Tom Tom One and am happy with it...when I did my research, I remember it had features that its competitors' comparable one did not have unless you bought one of their upgraded versions. Nice piece for a standard version....

I got the Tom Tom One partly on J-Roc's suggestion. I am happy with it.

The prices are falling on all of them.

these gadgets over-perform in cities. In the lessor developed areas they underform - which has tempted me to throw it out a window a few times (today was one such day)

I'm looking to get one for Christmas ( the Skinner is SUPPOSED to get me one), but I know nothing about which one to get. We travel so much that I thought it would be good to have, so I really need help here.

I have wanted a GPS for several years now and finally just got one this week.
After doing research I realized that I wanted one that had the "text to speech" function which means it calls out the street names rather than just saying "turn right in 500 feet", etc.

I also realized that with my big ole thick glasses and thick fingers that I would probably do much better with one of the wider 4.3" screens rather than the 3.5" ones.

Those two things meant more $$$ of course so this Christmas I was on a mission to find a bargain! Most of the ones fitting my criteria were from about $399 on up. However here at Christmas I found numerous ones on sale for around $299.

What caused me to go ahead and pull the trigger on the one I bought was that ShopNBC online had the Magellan 4040 which fit all my criteria for $299 and they would split that over four monthly charges on your credit or debit card. I had a promo code for a 15% discount at ShopNBC so ended up paying just $255 for it and that spread over four months.

I just got it Thursday and used it one day. Was too busy to play with it Friday and hibernated in the house all day today except for a two hour motorcycle ride!

I just saw this morning where CompUSA has an online only special for a brand I am not familiar with, Pharos, that is a 3.5" but has the text to speech function that the more expensive ones have and it is on sale for just $129 after $20 instant rebate and a $50 mail in rebate.

Esther,

I was just looking at more Sunday advertisements and Staples has a unit I had done some research on and liked for just $149.99!!!! That is $100 off the normal price. This one also has the text to speech function that uses street names instead of just distance. That is a feature usually only the more expensive ones have.

I had found some reviews of this unit online and it seems to be a good one. Definitely for the money.

CC1 my reseach showed that a lot of complaints with Magellan. According to the salesmen at Fryes, he said the Garmin and Tom Tom have had less returns than any of the other brands. The cheaper ones had more problems according to him.

I went with the Tom Tom because as you mentioned the feature of announcing the name of the street instead of just saying turn left 500 ft. I'm not real good at determing feet.
