The Day Lady Liberty Cried© By Gerri A. Anderson
She stands in the harbor, serene & tall,
Guarding this land for one & for all.
Just as she has for many a year,
A symbol of freedom for all far and near.
Lady Liberty was there on that day,
Watching over New York in her usual way.
It was September 11, 2001,
When an evil act was about to be done.
In the early morn at the start of the day,
With people at work and some on the way,
The sound of a plane was heard in that hour,
Those who were close saw it hit the first tower.
Before one could think what was happening there,
Another plane appeared in the air.
It too hit a tower, and as we watched in deep shock,
The Twin Towers came down destroying whole blocks.
Falling buildings once majestic and tall
Came down on that day, rained destruction on all.
Some froze or ran, some screamed and cried,
Some tried to help; some did and died!
A third plane hit the Pentagon in Washington D C.
As we cried out to God "How can this be?"
Pure evil this day has been done!
What mind could conceive of this destruction?
A fourth plane was hijacked upon that day
And was bound for our Capitol, to be used the same way.
Phone calls to loved ones from the plane helped to trace,
Events on the plane at that time, in that place.
There were heroes on board whom with selfless thought
Decided to stop this dark, evil plot!
They decided to risk their lives come what may,
We owe them a debt we can never repay!
Yes, our land has faced threats throughout the years,
Of war and death, bringing sorrow and tears.
Though an evil this vile had never been done,
This was an assualt on our land, on our basic freedom.
Through it all she stood out there
As she always does in the morning air.
She witnessed the fire, the smoke, and the fear.
She heard the screams and saw the tears.
As she watched with increasing dread
And knew that thousands had died,
Lady Liberty bowed her head,
And silently she cried.
