Re: Modern pentecostal church music and Oneness
Songs used to be Liturgical, meaning, they taught something, rehearsed something, to the congregation and visitors.
Now today the songs are just choruses. I watch visitors come to church and they just stand there. Even a lot of regulars just stand there during these songs.
In the past we have to break open a song book and read the words. Now nobody does since it's just a repetitive chorus about praise and worship
How about songs that tell us what praise is and what worship is?
Whatever happened to "On Calvary's hill of sorrow, where sins demands were paid"

Re: Modern pentecostal church music and Oneness
All great points made here. Well I remember when our church was in the process of going to all contemporary songs, we were told it was a better form of worship because the old music was just about him, but the new music was of songs sung to him (the intimacy thing) as if this was a better thing. I've seen now where that led us and is probably the main reason I quit going.

Well I guess I have nothing more to contribute to the discussion. If we are saying there should be good songs that teach Oneness thats really good. Other than that I should probably go back to one of the many threads about how good the old hymns were to comment.

Yeah really. Let's return to the good ole days of oil lamps and candels and singing without music

Not true. You contribute a lot. The video you posted, while I can do without the hollywood mood effects was nevertheless a good song. I love some of the older Vineyard songs like "Holy Is The Lord". I believe Maranatha Music had some pretty good songs out as well. Like I said, there are plenty of old hymns that are as cheeseball as it gets ("Great Speckled Bird" comes unbidden to my mind for some reason...lol) and there are some good newer songs as well.
I started this thread to find out the state of music among Oneness churches, if there were any theological, didactic songs of modern composition being used. I asked because I haven't been to a UPC or ALJC or independent church in years and really have no idea what's going on there musically.
On a related note... I don't look for music that is presented with an awesome performance, cause we don't worship to cd's or vids, we actually sing. I just look for biblically sound lyrics and a useable tune that doesn't overpower the words, something we can sing.
We sing a lot of old hymns (many which I've never heard in any church) and often use our own melody. A lot of old hynns have great lyrics but less than desirable melodies. Ex. I have no idea how "Help Me to Be Holy" is supposed to sound like but the way we do it works for us. Same with "More Abuntantly" and "Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah" and many others.

Re: Modern pentecostal church music and Oneness
And for the old saw about "hymns are ABOUT God but the new stuff is better cause it's TO God"...
Balderpucky.
We are instructed "declare among the people His doings" as part of worship. Hymns of praise that give testimony to God's great deeds are not only okay but SPECIFIED IN SCRIPTURE as part of the worship God wants. Besides MANY old hymns are directed TO God as prayers of supplication, adoration, thanksgiving, etc.
Jesus, thou art the sinner's friend.
As such I look to thee.
Now in the fullness of thy love,
O Lord remember me.
Remember thy pure words of grace,
Remember Calvary.
Remember all thy dying groans,
And then remember me.
Or how about:
Jesus hold my hand,
I need thee every hour.
Through this pilgrim land
protect me by thy power.
Hear my feeble plea,
O Lord look down on me,
When I kneel in prayer I hope to meet You there
blessed Jesus hold my hand.
Or:
I need thee, O I need thee!
Every hour I need thee!
Bless me now my Saviour,
I come to thee!
