Not sure about anything after that. The soul certainly goes to hell.

Re: Soul and Spirit

Here's my take on it...

- The body (Grk. soma) is the material part of a human being.
- The soul (Grk. psuche, from which we get the word "psyche") is the immaterial consciousness of a human being.
- The spirit (Grk. pneuma) is best translated "breath". It is the immaterial "life force" or "essence of life" of a human being.

Man's spirit "essence of life" was connected to God prior to the fall and therefore God's very own eternal essence of life flowed through man bringing eternality. When man sinned, this connection with the creator was severed and therefore man's life force was cut off from that which is eternal. This limited man's conscious abilities and caused man's mind to become corrupt and self centered. This also disconnected man from the source of eternality, thereby subjecting the body to aging and death. A man's spirit is slowly ebbing away and thus it is declared "dead" (being cut off from all eternal life).

When one receives the Holy Ghost, their dead human spirit is reunited to God through the very Spirit of God Himself. Thus the Holy Ghost filled man is "alive" again spiritually, re-connected to the source of eternal life. Bible study and prayer helps to reform the soul (mind) and bring a person into the state of having the "mind of Christ". The body's regeneration will take place at Christ's return when it is raised from the dead incorruptable (eternal). Our union with Christ, through the Holy Spirit, allows Christ's very own life and righteousness to freely flow to us. Jesus is the vine and we are the branches, and just as life and nutrients flow from a vine to all the branches, so too does Christ's very own life and righteousness flow through our very being. Thus we stand having life that is eternal and a righteous holiness that is not our own and doesn't originate from us. This union with God in our spirits, the renewing of our minds, and ultimately our bodily resurrection will complete the Father's sole desire... to conform us into the very image and likeness of Jesus Christ.

Biblical Christianity is about more than merely going to Heaven. It's about becoming ONE with Jesus through the Spirit, and allowing that oneness with Him to transform you into a son of God who is fashioned into the very image and likeness of Christ.

It's a lot like this:

Body - Hardware
Soul - Software
Spirit - Power Source

Where are you finding your power? Are you plugged into an eternal supply of life and power? Or are your batteries slowly dying inside?

Come to Christ and be a partaker in the very divine essence of God through a spiritual oneness with the Almighty God in Christ Jesus.

Re: Soul and Spirit

Great stuff, Aquila,

It reminds me of a study I made about the association of the terms CARNAL, NATURAL and SPIRITUAL. Each of these terms is associated with each of the terms BODY, SOUL and SPIRIT.

CARNAL in Greek is SARKIKOS.
NATURAL in Greek is PSUCHIKOS
SPIRITUAL in Greek is PNEUMATIKOS.

SARX is the Greek term for FLESH.

PSUCHE is the Greek term for SOUL

PNEUMA is the Greek term for SPIRIT.

This helps us understand that a CARNAL (sarkikos) person is one who is influenced more by what relates to his BODY/FLESH than anything else.

A NATURAL (psuchikos) person is one influenced by the realm of his SOUL.

A SPIRITUAL (pneumatikos) person is one influenced by what his SPIRIT relates to.

In turn, this gives us insight as to what the body, soul and spirit is talking about.

1Th 5:23 KJV And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Deism teaches we were all part of the whole in the beginning, and that we live in this life learning to better ourselves till we all become perfect at which time we will all be reunited within the whole. That may not be exactaly like or worded right but the parallel is there.

I for one have come to realize that true christianity is not about going to heaven, that is a given. Christianity is about relationship with God right here in this life. We are too wrapped up in the after life. Just as the religious leaders of the day were in Christ time. And what was his response to them? "You search the scripture thinking you have eternal life but they speek of me" That is still what we are doing today, performance base religion is the effort of our own works to gain eternal life. Never building upon the personal relationship with God that Christ came to earth to make way for.

Re: Soul and Spirit

Mike Blume, I am rethinking watchman nee's division of soul and spirit. I can understand dividing our soul from our sinful nature other wise known as mortification of the flesh. But if our soul is who we are, our mind/ego, then how can we divide our soul from our spirit? we never leave our mind. we must decide in our mind/soul whether to follow the carnal nature or the spirit. I think instead we should be trying to infuse our mind/soul with the mind of the spirit/word and the will and feelings of the spirit. how would you respond to this thought?

Re: Soul and Spirit

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
It's my understanding that the "division of soul and of spirit" is a work performed by the Word of God. Good biblical preaching can divide and discern if the issue is one of mind (soul) or nature of one's life essence (spirit). The rememdy for each is different. If the issue is one of soul, one must focus on God's Word and undergo the renewing of the mind, taking on the mind of Christ in the matter. If one is an issue of Spirit the individual has been separated from God and needs to be spiritually regenerated (renew their oneness with God) through a fresh baptism of the Holy Spirit.

thanks for responding aquila. i'm not sure you understand watchman nee's division of soul and spirit. it is my understanding that his interpretation of dividing soul and spirit is what most people would describe as mortification of the flesh. my question is: is mortification of the flesh a division of soul and spirit or a division of soul from carnal nature where heb 4:12 wouldn't apply? maybe your understanding is more biblical and not based on watchmn nee's interpretation.
