I did not get to watch the "After the Catch", and didn't know he had passed away. Yeah, It did seem that the younger son had some kind of problem, I did miss some of that episode as well.
I watch Ice Road Truckers as well. I like shows about Alaska.
Yeah it sure did, I imagine many of those men have problems, seems odd that Phil didn't know his son was using.
I was so bummed to hear of Capt. Phil's death. Keith and I watch the show frequently-
We missed 'after the catch' since we already knew he died.
I did not realize that he had recently discovered that his son was an addict before his stroke- almost sounds like it could have been the contributing factor.
He caught the boy in his stateroom on the return trip back to Dutch Harbor. The kid was stealing his pain pills.
Phil called him out, told him he was a theif and a liar and he didnt want to see him again.
The kid told him he was an adict. that evening (or the next day) Phil was found in his state room face down.
It seems there was some degree of reconscilliation however it was gut wrenching to watch the whole thing unfold.

Since I work with addicts on a daily basis, this really hits home for me.
Oh my for this family, I am sure the kid feels responsible.-- but Phil was not in the best of shape to begin with he always seemed like a ticking bomb ready to go off, watching him chain smoke like he did it was bound to catch up with him. Still so sad to hear how it all went down though.

That was part of what I missed, then. I knew Phil was angry about something, and the boy didn't seem right. I had no idea he was an addict. And I didn't know about the After show either.

I agree, fantastic job- it's amazing how they bring you right into there world. It is so fascinating.
Sounds like he needs to get into a treatment center and get sober. That is what many of our folks do before they come into our houses, they go into a treatment center first and then come to a sober living home. But they have to want the help first.
Next week will be the episode where Phil dies. I also think the After the Catch show will focus on that.
