Re: Going Olde Skool ... Bringin' Back John 3:16

It's a shame those who penned the words to the bible forgot to put in those qualifying words.

Like REALLY TRUELY

All those places in John that speak of believing.

John could have written TRUELY BELIEVE or believe and speak in tongues.

But he didn't.

This thread is giving me flashbacks of attending VBS with a Southern Baptist friend when I was a kid.

John 3:16 was the first memory verse they made us learn.

The second was John 14:6.

Yes, I remember that also. Though I don't remember Acts 2:38 being memorized at our UPC VBS.

The UPC I went to as a kid never had VBS. That's why I went to the Southern Baptist VBS. They got to do all the fun stuff in the summer! LOL

Re: Going Olde Skool ... Bringin' Back John 3:16

the first verses I memorized (Nondenominational Christian) were Psalm 23 and John 11:35.

I was helping clean the church one day and found a cheat sheet on the pulpit that had the words to the Lord's prayer written out. I had always been amazed at how that preacher could quote all those verses at once, til that point. After seeing that cheat sheet no one could convince me to memorize another thing!

Re: Going Olde Skool ... Bringin' Back John 3:16

Belief without action is not faith. Belief without endurance is not salvation.

(Mat 10:22) And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

(Mat 24:13) But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

(Mar 13:13) And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

(Mar 16:16) He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

(Joh 10:9) I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
(Act 2:21) And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

(Act 15:11) But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.
(Rom 8:24) For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

(Rom 10:9) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

(Rom 10:13) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

(Eph 2:5) Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved

(Eph 2:8) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

(2Th 2:10) And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

(Tit 3:5) Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

(1Pe 3:20) Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
(1Pe 3:21) The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

If mere mental assent is all it takes to save then why did this occur?
Act 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Act 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Act 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Act 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
Act 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Act 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Act 16:26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.
Act 16:27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
Act 16:28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
Act 16:29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,
Act 16:30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
Act 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
Act 16:32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
Act 16:33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
Act 16:34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

Dan,

Was this verse exercised within the book of Acts? After all, it is the early history or the church.

Just one verse which states someone was commanded to simply "believe". Remember, the epistles were written to churches that had already heard and obeyed the gospel message.

If someone perishes does that mean that at some point they cease to exist ?
