Torrent meaning download an illegal copy of Windows xp? You can buy a copy for 80 bucks
Are you sure it came with discs? Some PC makers put all the files on the hard drive in a safe location

You can pop the CD in then boot. It should ask if you want to format. IF that is what you want say yes.
However that will not restore the PC to it's original. Whatever extra programs not included on Winxp that was orginally on there will be lost

Check to make sure the files are not already on the partition.
Try hitting an F key at boot up, like F7,8,9 or 10 and it might give you restore options

I'm going to give ubuntu a try.
Downloading it as I type this. I also have the disc burning software they recomend as well as the md5sum file confirmation thingee.
Once it's installed, will I need to find my own firewall or does one come with the system? I already plan on installing antivirus, spyware and adware protection.
|
Windows comes with a firewall. YOu can get good antispyware and virus protection for free on the net...
What was wrong with the performance?

Some eMachines have a Recovery partition that can be accessed through F10 or F11 at the BIOS splash screen or you can just buy a set of Recovery CDs from eMachines.
