Barak is a biblical name. Don't know about Hussein. Good thing nobody's running named Adolph.

Offensive, well yeah -- but nothing racist about it.
I didn't even find it offensive, it was awkward to hear it. The sentence seemed... erratic.

Maybe they're trying to spin this into a remake of Perot's "you people" comment.

This clearly was not any where near as offensive.

That Sheriff is being investigated because he essentially used his position as a Law Enforcement Officer in a political way-- as if to imply the police are voting for mccain/palin, you should too.

His use of Sen. Obama's middle name was not harmless, but it was only the icing on the cake for the line he crossed.

I hope he is prosecuted-- he knew better, especially as the Sheriff!

Hatch Act

Permitted Activities
Covered state and local employees may-

run for public office in nonpartisan elections
campaign for and hold office in political clubs and organizations
actively campaign for candidates for public office in partisan and nonpartisan elections
contribute money to political organizations and attend political fundraising functions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prohibited Activities

Covered state and local employees may not-

be candidates for public office in a partisan election
use official authority or influence to interfere with or affect the results of an election or nomination
directly or indirectly coerce contributions from subordinates in support of a political party or candidate

Looks like there's not a problem at all with him introducing McCain. The complaints are that he said "On November 4, let's leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened"

Well I am not sure the charges are valid, the investigation will expose that.

For the record I am not an Obama supporter. But I don't have much tolerance for emotionally charged irrational arguments by either side.

The Sheriff rightly or wrongly took PUBLIC flack for his use of Hussein.

The federal investigation is whether he improperly used his influence.

The title of the thread appears to be an example of irrational emotionally charged disconnect.

Seems to be theme here over many of threads I have scanned for the last few months.

Not sure when or why things changed, but I guess that would be the discussion for another and different (and no doubt emotionally charged name calling) thread.

Actually the title of this thread reflects the title of the article - "Feds investigating sheriff after 'Hussein' remark"

Apparently, using Hussein DOES mean something. There was a clip of one of the leaders from the Mideast saying that Barak HUSSEIN Obama will lead America and he was overly emphasizing Hussein and the crowd cheered!

There was no mention in the article of using Hussein being a crime.

Actually the title of the BLOG was:

Feds investigating sheriff after 'Hussein' remark

and the excerpt was:

LEE COUNTY: Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott may have more to worry about than just the court of public opinion. Federal investigators are now looking into whether Scott broke the law by campaigning for John McCain.

Officials with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel say they have received so many phone calls from the public that they launched an investigation into Sheriff Scott on Tuesday.

The question is - did he use his position as sheriff to influence an election? If so, he could be in violation of a federal election law called the Hatch Act.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office receives more than $1 million in federal grant money from everything from human trafficking to bullet proof vests.

But if Sheriff Scott is found in violation of the Hatch Act, the feds can pull two years salary worth of federal funding - the equivalent to $300,000 for the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Please...you are kidding me right? It is offensive to use a middle name? If Obama is so sure of himself and his heritage, as he states he is, then what is the problem? If we are not to use his middle name in one situation then it will not be appropriate to use it in any situation. Maybe he needs to look into having a name change done if it is so offensive or attacking to use his middle name. Really is this that big of a deal??? I think not...JMO.:cra zy

It will be interesting to see the outcome. Looks like by the Hatch Act he can campaign for McCain.
