Re: Opening Ceremony of the Olympics

Wasn't the torch relay and lighting incredible? The way that guy flew all the way around the stadium and looked like he was running. And then the fire going through the pipe and up to the cauldron. Simply amazing.

Re: Opening Ceremony of the Olympics

Got back in from our anniversary dinner and my daughter and her family who were watching it in our home theater in high def on the 92" screen made us come up and they rewound it and played the first part of the ceremony for us.

It was absoutely amazing from both a technological and human standpoint. At the end I told my family that I feel sorry for the next few countries that get the summer Olympics because this is going to be a very hard act to follow as far as opening ceremonies go.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Re: Opening Ceremony of the Olympics

Really, the successors shouldn't try to outdo China, IMO. It would be impossible. However, their amazing culture is tainted by their human rights atrocities, and while tonight might be a very proud night for many of them, proud and happy are not the same thing. It's hard to watch without that nagging thought in the back of my mind.

Regardless, it was a cultural treat. I expected perfection from China, and they definitely delivered!

Re: Opening Ceremony of the Olympics

I was watching it here but couldn't get close to the stadium. The coverage here in Beijing was incredible! The Chinese people here are proud of their accomplishment.

Re: Opening Ceremony of the Olympics

I stayed awake as long as I could last night to watch it, but kept dozing off when the teams were entering the stadium...I REALLY wanted to see the ending where they lit the torch since I'd stayed awake for everything prior to it.

The sleep bug got the better of me...I happened to pop awake to see the US team make its rounds, but was fighting very hard to keep my eyes open. I gave up after that.

So this morning I woke up at 6 AM and turned the TV on, and it appears I pretty much picked up where I left off last night. woot!

Hubby and I were just AMAZED at what we saw! The precision of the military flag carriers was INCREDIBLE. The drums were awe-inspiring. The men under the 'printer' boxes were unbelievable. Hubby thought he had seen legs, and I told him no way, that HAS to be mechanically automated. I was WRONG! That was amazing they could do that without seeing anything inside a little box.

The technology with the lights, lazers, and LCD screens were phenominal. The fireworks were incredible. The footsteps leading to the Bird's Nest were awesome. The Tai Chi performers were precise, the straight lines were incredible. I could go on, and on....the ship 'rowers', the green/lit up guys, the 'bird' guys, the women in the GORGEOUS costumes, the kids. The guys running around the globe. Did I leave anything out? I'm sure I did. It was an exciting evening, and you just KNEW you were watching history in the making.

Also ironic, they have a zero energy display using LCDs and solar energy...ironic considering how smoggy Beiging is

Re: Opening Ceremony of the Olympics

I thought the glimpse of President Bush with his jacket off was great. Of course when they stood as the USA team came in he put it back on.
Does Montreal host the winter games?

I am watching women's soccer right now. China and Canada.
