I noticed that they still use the title "Banner of Love" for their newsletter. If I remember correctly, that was the title of the newsletter published by the Church of Jesus Christ (Bishop Mark Lawson's group) back when I joined it in 1959

I noticed that there have been no new Banner of Love magazines on the site since the September 2007 issue.

In the August 2007 issue there was a notice that the insurance was no longer available because the number had dropped to 12. See attachment below. I guess that's all that was left of the organization then and it may even be smaller now. Bishop Honea said that at one time there were 57. I guess that was the total of ministers in the organization.

No, Sam, I haven't heard anything else about Bro. Honea since I spoke with him on the phone the other day. I'm gonna try to go see him this weekend, though. However, not sure I'm gonna make it My weeekend is pretty full now. But, will try.

As far as his group- I don't know if the group still exists or not. I'd say, judging by the lack of activity on his website, there isn't much left of the organization. I (and I'm sure, he) appreciate your prayers and concerns for him.

Bishop Honea,

My prayers are with you. Remember Exo. 23:25 "...and I will take sickness away from you."

God Bless,

Bishop Honea called me today. He is 68 years old so he is 2 years younger than I am. He is suffering from kidney failure --both kidneys. He is on home dialysis for four one hour sessions per day. He said he is not discouraged though. He has someone who helps him with his pastoral oversight of the church in Tullahoma. He invited me to a convention in August. His daughter (or maybe daughter-in-law) was tested and is not a match to provide a kidney for transplant. A grand daughter (I think he said she is in her twenties) is going to be tested to see if she can donate a kidney.

We talked about a couple of things. A mutual acquaintance, Bro. Bob Winstead, has died but his wife Lena Mae is still alive. Also, Bishop G.R. Brock, who was Presiding Bishop of the CoJCPF that we both belonged to at one time, has been dead since 1968 and Bishop Brock's wife Eula died in 1994. I had seen the obituary for Sis. Brock. My wife and I stayed with Bishop and Sis Brock in 1959 when I preached for him in Indianapolis, IN.

Bishop Honea is chairman of an organization called the First Church of Jesus Christ. Their web site is
http://thefirstchurchofjesuschrist.org/default.aspx
I mentioned that his web site does not have very current issues of the organization's magazine, The Banner of Love, on it and he said he would send me some newer issues. The Banner of Love was the title of the magazine published by the Church of Jesus Christ organization founded by Bishop Mark Lawson back in 1927.

I told him that I have been praying for him since I heard of his illness.

It would be good if others here could pray for him also.

If I remember correctly, we were not introduced nor did we speak to one another. He and I and some others were in a conference in Niles, Michigan in 1958 (might have been 1959). The church was pastored by Sis. Johnson who took over as pastor after her husband died. Bishop Steinbarger was on the Board of Bishops and was also part of that local church in Niles, I think. The organization was the Church of Jesus Christ Pentecostal Faith. Bishop G.R. Brock was the Presiding Bishop. Elder Bob Winstead and his wife Lena Mae were there and an African American minister named Sis. Jackson. There was also an Hispanic minister with quite a strong accent but I don't remember his name. I don't remember the names or anything else about any others. Sis Johnson used to teach off of charts. She was probably in her 70's then or close to it.

Bishop Brock told about going to preach in a church that Eld. Honea was trying to establish. I think it was in Chicago. It was so cold that Bishop Brock said he kept his overcoat on while preaching.

I was not a licensed minister with the Church of Jesus Christ Pentecostal Faith at that time but did take out a license in the early 1960's. I was going to a UPC church at that time. When we left the UPC church and started going to an ALJC church, I let my license expire.

I'm sure Bishop Brock and Sister Johnson have been dead for years. I heard that the organization they were part of (Church of Jesus Christ Pentecostal Faith) later merged with a group called Church of Jesus Christ with headquarters at Kingsport, Tennessee but maybe their headquarters were in Oxford, Pennsylvania at that time. I did meet up with Bob Winstead in Eskdale, WV in 1959 when I was there for a conference of the Church of Jesus Christ (Bishop Lawson's group) and at that time I took out a license with the Church of Jesus Christ.

Two pictures are attached to this email. The single one is my 12th grade high school picture taken in the fall of 1955. The other picture was taken in 1959 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the church pastored by Bishop Brock. It was in an old theater building. At that time Bishop and Sis. Brock were living in the garage of one of their church members. Emily was the daughter of those members and she played piano at Bishop Brock's church. I preached for Bishop Brock at least once that weekend. We were there on a Saturday night and a Sunday morning. We stayed with Bishop and Sis. Brock in that garage and we slept on a couch. My wife was pregnant. That's a maternity top she has on in the picture. Our first child was born a couple months after that picture.
When I was a baby Sis. Johnson was the Pastor. Bishop Stienbarger dedicated me as a baby, Jan, 66'. Bishop Steinbargers daughter, attends our Church in Buchanan MI. I lived in the parsonage and took care of the grounds the last yr. the Church was open. It has recently been sold. I recieved the HG. in that church on fort street in 1975.
