I think it's pathetic that insurance companies have more say so in health care than doctors and medical professionals. If they don't think it's necessary, they won't cover it. If you already have a condition, they won't cover anything related to it.
It's horrible.
I'm writing a paper now on economics in health care. The stats are staggering.
Specifically what are you finding and how has it helped to shape or change any of your views of the current system we have?

Folks are painting the FLDS men as evil monsters. Other folks say that this was another Waco-type incident of intrusive fascist government bullying, but without the armed resistance. Still others point out that CPS is out of control all across the country, and is so well known for going off half-cocked and operating under the presumption of guilt even after innocence is proven, that CPS is a prime outlet for vindictiveness in our society today.
I have been attempting to understand this situation based on an understanding of the fallen nature of humankind. Looking at the various players in the scene, for starters we have the polygamists accused of statutory rape. Unregenerated man throughout history has sought out sex with females of all ages, males, animal species, and inanimate objects. Is it believable that underneath all that pioneer charm and piety lurks machinery for the satisfaction of lust? Sure. We don't actually KNOW what went on in there, for as of yet the alleged 16-year-old accuser has not been found. The refusal of mothers to point out their children, and vice-versa, is indicative that all is not well and they know it.
We have CPS accused of vague, unspecified wrongdoing. CPS is widely considered to be as corrupt and inefficient as any other bureaucracy. Similar abuse has and does occur in Foster homes. Does CPS have a financial interest in increasing their clientele and their visibility? Sure. The true believers within the ranks of the CPS would put some missionaries to shame with their fervor. The pure and the impure motives both drive the same actions for this group.
Then we have law enforcement. They are accused of acting on a whim, arresting and detaining all the wrong people, and violating their rights. Law enforcement is hanged if they do and hanged if they don't. But there's nothing like "rescuing" (detaining) 400 children to help justify one's existence. There are polygamous, abusive Islamics, and there are abusive illegal aliens, but it certainly appears strategic that they have chosen to invade and disrupt a group that exposes them to the least risk of media fallout: White nonconformist fundamentalists. Does the LE involved know that society is conditioned to dehumanize groups such as FLDS by Hollywood and mass media? Sure. LE gets to appear brave while not offending vocal special interests. Not exactly brave.
I make no apologies for child molesters.
This incident shows us that we are just one or two court cases away from cementing the notion that children are the property of the state.
You make some great points. My wife and I were talking about this and asked about what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? They don't even have the accuser. My wife and I were talking about this and it's chilling. What if we have a little girl and they hear a "report" that our daughter feels abused because we make our daughter wear dresses in the winter time? Would they take her from us?

Here's a thought I had in my crazy brain...what if this whole thing was timed and is politically motivated? Even if it's not...can you see this having any political impact in the Presidential race?

Huh? Splain please, but don't type 18 paragraphs to explain it, 'cause I won't read it! LOL

Can we really compare a "report" that someone feels abused by having to wear dresses and a "report" that someone is being sexually abused, and forced into marriage and pregnancy at a young age?
I think the state is acting appropriately. It isn't about adults practicing polygamy. And it isn't about religious freedom. It's about breaking the law AND abusing children. In actuality--not perception.
I believe Dr. Phil had a couple of kids out of that sect who escaped or were rescued last year or year before last. They've been working on getting some kind of evidence or break in this case for awhile. And it wasn't because they were openly practicing polygamy, although legally speaking, that's enough right there. They've been in the state's radar because of the underage marriages and pregnancies.

I don't see it. I'm sure you'll connect the dots for us. LOL!!! Before we know it, this thread will be about healthcare.
By the way, are you related to the Hall's, the missionaries? To Kimberly Hall? Just curious....

LOL
I can see two angles.
From the Right:
First, we could view this as a move based on a spurious accusation that appears to threaten religious liberty. This could rally religious conservatives against what might be perceived as further encroachment of government power into the freedom of religious practice bringing more religious conservatives to rally to Sen. John McCain.
From the Left:
McCain is currently in the position of having to select a VP running mate. There was speculation about Gov. Romney joining McCain on the ticket. Certainly any highly negative images of Mormonism in the media would present a significant obstacle to Romney in the American social consciousness, thereby hindering McCain from selecting a man who could be a rather popular VP candidate.
This was just a crazy thought I had in my crazy little brain. LOL

No relation. Sorry. I'll do my best to avoid turning this into a health care discussion. I just feel passionately about it because I know some hard cases. I'm just a bleeding heart. LOL
