pigeonhole:
1. a hole or recess, or one of a series of recesses, for pigeons to nest in. 2. one of a series of small compartments in a desk, cabinet, or the like, used for filing papers, letters, etc. 3. to lay aside for future reference. 4. to put aside and ignore. 6. to put into categories.

I am using it in the sense of #6. We have a tendency to pigeon hole people, or put them in a category that brushes them with the same brush as others we have decided belong to the same group.

My experience has been that it's possible for a person to be liberal on some matters, conservative on others, and take a moderate position on other issues. However, in order for someone to discover this they would have to actually get to know someone and have conversations with them. For some people that's just too much effort, so they simply "pigeon hole" them.

This last part reminded me of a flyer I received today.

Don't take it personally D&J, I was simply using the pigeon to illustrate the "small-mindedness" that leads some people to dump on others without ever having spoken to the person personally.

I don't know who you are, but based on any of your posts that I have read, you certainly are not a small-minded person IMHO.
