Is that why he is no longer your son? What did you do? Did you just drop him off somewhere? Poor kid. The little orphan boy is probably still wondering if that was the wrong question.

No, I didn't say that. I said, "My wife once had our son, 6 years old at the time, lean over and ask,......", which is grammatically correct and correctly punctuated. If I had said what you wrote, it would seem to indicate that something happened after my wife gave birth to him.
