I haven't been in a footwashing service in over thirty years, but if it is to be practiced, it should be done discreetly.

Some of the posts on this thread have eluded to co-ed services. I think that is very inappropiate.

In the services I've been in the ladies went off into a private room.

Actually it should be outside the city.

Our pastor told about an incident like that. It happened many many years ago in a nearby city. Somebody became angry over something going on in a service so he left after making a big issue of it, rebuking and shaking the dust off his feet very publicly as he made a dramatic exit. Then, a couple of minutes later he had to sneak back in because he had forgotten to take his galoshes/overshoes with him.

It's not that I minded the footwashing, it was all the emotions that went along with it. It seemed that if I prayed how I truly felt, it wouldn't have been enough. I would willingly pray a blessing over the person, and a prayer of thanksgiving of what they have meant to me in my life, but I honestly never felt the need to cry and get emotional. I am probably not explaining myself well. I know how relieved I feel that I no longer have to be apart of footwashing in that setting.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here? You don't believe folks are sincere when they wash feet and pray, causing tears?

Not everyone gets emotional as you say, when they wash feet, but let's be honest not everyone gets emotional when they pray at the altar's either and cry. How is that different?

I've practiced servanthood in ways that are practical and real and I've had to submit myself to people for most of my adult life. To me, footwashing is irrelevant and unnecessary, but do it if you feel it's necessary and if it is a blessing to you or to someone else.
Wasn't the custom at that time to wash the feet when they came into the house? Not later, as when Jesus did it?

Not sure how anyone can consider it irrelevant and unnecessary when Jesus said this "ought" you to do also.

You have got to be kidding! He gave you scripture. It appears to be what you don't want to accept. But you can't say he doesn't have scripture, after he gave you much scripture.

Brother Epley, do you wash Each man's feet in your congregation, do they all wash yours?

I am just curious, if there is no contention and the subject of honor for each member is intact, meaning no brother has ought against one another, then what is the point lining up then washing each down the line?

Maybe I just don't get it.
