I've always told my children that the spirit of Santa is real - that of giving, rewarding good, happiness, etc.
My children are teens - they know the real story. But, they still leave cookies and milk for Santa - and I still eat them. We all know - and we all have fun with it.
I have never told my child that Santa is real. He isn't so I would feel that I was being dishonest. I always told him that he was just like Barney, Winnie-the-Pooh, or any other made up character.
Besides, I never wanted Santa to get credit for the money I spend on my child's gifts.
However, he did get to sit on Santa's lap and take pictures. We do have fun at Christmas time.
This is how we are and Jasmine is almost 5 and has never liked Santa and the other day she told me he was fake and that I wrapped her presents. I have never felt right about telling her he was real, I would hate to see her disappointment when she find out he isn't. He is just something fun to talk about and watch movies about at Christmas time just like other characters.

Might I add that I do NOT think that Christmas and Santa and all the other characters are evil of sinful. I just choose to not set my children up for a let down but we still have fun with all of it.

Have you guys never heard of "spirit of giving" or "in the spirit of the conversation" or "spirit of the season" or "high spirited" or "free spirit", etc?
Spirit does not just mean "Holy Spirit."

Lying and idolatry is always evil.
