I'd like to add that it is very hard to be lost once you have been saved. God keeps dealing with us and dealing with us. Ask all the prodigals out there. The mercy of God is great.

You put those who believe the new birth is the baptism of water and the baptism of the Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues between a rock and a hard place. If we say a believer will not see or enter the kingdom of God without being born again, then you will say we are acting as judges.

If we say we are not judges but simply declare what we believe to be the truth of the word of God ie, tongues is the visible and auditory sign that a believer has been filled with the Holy Spirit, but will not say if a believer does not speak in tongues they are going to hell, then you say we wriggle and squirm and are scared to come clean.

Seriously MOW, what do you expect? Either way you will find fault. So why bother.

Yes, very plausible. But I think there are many reasons why believers don't get filled right away. Your reason would be one of many.

Simple....because many of them do. There are MANY whose certification of salvation is not complete until someone has spoken in tongues. Seriously, to say "Their relationship with the Lord is of lesser importance than their completion of the 3 step plan." is outright misrepresentation of what I believe.

It may be a misrepresentation of what YOU believe, and I can certainly accept that, but it is NOT a misrepresentation of what MANY believe.

Maybe this is what you did when you were in the UPC, teach the new birth to the detriment of bypassing repentance, and therefore you project it onto others. I don't know.

I taught and preached what I was taught to preach and teach. I was schooled by some of the most respected men in the UPC. I learned well. Certainly not everyone was taught what I was taught, but I was taught in one of THE bastions of 3 step theology at the time.

I don't believe it is a straw man argument. At least not from my perspective and experience.

A real Christian speaks in tongues.

Scripture clearly teaches that the salvation process is not complete until you speak in tongues. Then, we must "grow" to a place in a timely fashion where we must throw away our tv, shave our faces, burn our shorts and short sleeved shirts.

But the salvation process is not really complete there. That's only the beginning!!! There's a whole lot more you must do-- the list varies, depending on which church you attend and in which part of the country you spoke in tongues initially.

Eventually, the really saved Christians realize that their church is the only church in their town that one can be saved in-- their church is the only "safe place" in the whole town, city and some times, region. All others are lost and will die and go to hell, until they join your church. Why? Because they don't have the Spirit.

Without the Spirit you aren't God's child, you're satan's child! That's why you haven't spoke in tongues yet, ya big dummy!!!

The reason some don't speak in tongues, is because, they don't understand that they are the ones who will do the speaking. Mark 16:17 says it very clearly: "In my name,......they (the believers) shall speak....".

Acts 2:4 says: "And they ("they" is the subject of that sentence) were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they (understood subject) began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance".

The miracle is not not who is doing the speaking, the miracle is that the Holy Spirit gives them the words to speak. (utterance). Whether they hear the words in their heads, as Stoneking stated, or whether the words just spontaneously gush out of their mouths, it is still "they" who are doing the speaking.
