Re: Sermon Notes
I may be too late for this thread. But I want to tell my "gross" story. I was preaching in the UPC chruces around the island of Puerto Rico. I carried some old bleached bones of a cow that a young man in our chruch provided me with as an object visual for a sermon on dry bones. I left the bones in the rental car carefully sealed in a zip-lock bag and in another sack - Walmart or some such. The night service in Aguadilla was going great until I opened the bag and threw out dry bones on the altar; they were no longer dry but were now red and very yucky from the plastic, hot environment of the rental car and baggie. Just stick to the notes and use completely manufactured, plastic materials for any visuals. Lots of notes

Re: Sermon Notes
I figure if you are going to take time to study and prepare for your sermons you should at least have an outline. I know some preachers that will go to a service without any notes, others I know will have their entire bible lessons typed up. I probably fall right in the middle. Just a few key words to jog my memory while I preach.

This thread just shows how different we all are and the diversity among preachers.
Over the years my notes were usually just a few scripture references on a small piece of paper. I have problems looking at notes and finding where I am. So I often don't even look at them once I get going. I have preached the same sermon more than once over the years. I ordinarily have a pretty good idea what I am gong to speak on before I get up.
Just a few days ago I was talking to my wife about a sermon I preached probably 40 years ago. I got a call on a Sunday afternoon to preach at a (UPC) church that night. I was going to an ALJC church at the time. This was a small church. I went by myself. For some reason my wife and kids did not go but I don't remember why. It was probably about an hour's drive away. I had no idea what I was going to preach on. I had no sermon in mind. I just knew that I was supposed to preach on the Holy Ghost Baptism but no idea what I was going to say. When I stepped to the pulpit I still did not know just what I was going to say but I took a text (can't remember where it was) and started preaching. I don't remember how long I preached but all of a sudden I knew that the sermon was finished so I stopped and gave the altar call. There may have been as many as 25 people there that night and I probably was acquainted with half a dozen or so. If I remember correctly, two or maybe three people received the Holy Ghost baptism that night. I have no idea if they were new converts or if they had been around for a while. There were no water baptisms but I don't think the church even had a baptistery so I don't know how they baptized people there. I've often wondered what I really preached that night. I wish I could hear it or see it.
