Re: Acid reflux
I had to respond to this one because I’ve suffered with acid reflux / GERD for years. After getting tired of having to sleep in the recliner several nights a week, I talked to my doctor about it. After having an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (yeah, that’s about as much fun to experience as it is to spell) the gastroenterologist put me on daily doses of prescription strength meds and I still have to take them. However, a few years ago I heard of a report of these drugs causing brittle bone disease so I talked to my gastroenterologist about it and he scoffed at those findings and told me not to worry about it. Long story short, I now find myself officially diagnosed with high moderate Osteopenia. That’s right, I'm well on my way to brittle bone disease. Picture this, a middle aged guy having to go to the local Women’s Health Center where they specialize in mammograms as that’s the only place to get a regular bone density tests done around here, lol. The staff at the health center also thought that was a little funny when my doctor sent me there, but it wasn’t funny when the results were read. Most people don’t realize that Proton Pump Inhibitors like Nexium®, Prevacid®, and Prilosec® and my favorite, Aciphex® also inhibit your digestive system from absorbing calcium. I’m now on mega doses of calcium with vitamin D and I'm into a serious walking exercise program to try to rebuild some bone density while there’s still hope. A co-worker of mine, also a male in his mid-forties taking these kinds of drugs, has this condition as well, only he’s already suffered fractured vertebra. So beware if you have to take this stuff to treat your acid reflux. Talk to your doctor about monitoring your bone density and don’t let him blow it off.

Re: Acid reflux
Someone in my family was told by a lady doctor who tries to use natural means for
dealing with these things, that the anti-acid (Tums, Rolaids, etc.) were not good for
you. That long term use they would rob you of calcium.
She advised our daughter to not eat late at night, lay off chocolate and foods with
tomatoes, (spagetti, lasagna, pizza w tomato sauce, etc) and spicy foods, especially
at night.
Now, REV, where is the false doctrine in this!
Every once in a while if I have that feeling like I am going to have a acid reflux attack,
I drink a small amount of Pepsi, don't go to bed for three or four hours and I am fine.
If I violate these points, am only hurting myself! Why not choose to listen and learn. Seldom have any problem.
Offered these points before. Hopefully someone can benefit from them!

Re: Acid reflux
Instant Relief without drugs:
Drink 1 - 2 tablespoons of:
Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (Periodically until it goes away)
1-5 times a day if severe.
Change your diet:
From: Bread
To: Wraps, or lettuce wraps, or pannini's.
Basically reduce intake of leaven
(That includes who your current ministry is. lol j/k)
I buy those "Thin Wheats" made by Oroweat:
http://www.oroweat.com/Thins/
But even then I only eat them twice a week, three at the most.
Reduce Sugar intake, sodas, etc..
Drink more water, use stevia instead of sugar in your tea.
But most importantly than all, fast. Nothing cures allergies, illnesses, reflux's, head ache's, etc.. quicker than good old fashion fasting. Even unbelievers know this...

Coke is actually a little better, and does wonders for a mild upset tummy.
As far as ant-acid tablets being bad for you, they are -when taken in extreme amounts (like most things in life). Their occasional use is perfectly fine and they DO work, but I have also seen the stressful business man popping them like they had a bottomless roll in their pockets. That sort of misuse is not advisable.
Avoiding spicy food is not the end all and be all either. Most people don't realize that the natural acid content in their stomachs is FAR greater then any hot pepper they would normally eat -this is why a bout of acid reflux hurts so much. Just food in general should be avoided just before turning in at night because it helps to produce more acid for the purposes of digestion -doesn't matter if it is a blow-your-mind hot pepper or a piece of toast. This is advice I need to take more often since we usually eat between 10:30 and 11 at night.

Re: Acid reflux
Have a dear friend who worked at a hospital for years. She said it seemed Friday and Sat. nights would find a few people in the emergency room around midnight. They thought they were having a heart attack, which many times was only the result of going out and binging on too much Mexican food, etc. Sometimes it was a gall bladder attack or an acic reflux attack from too much heavy, spicy food, or going home and going right to bed only to awaken a while later, thinking they were having a heart attack.
Lacey, Randy Wayne, Pepsi always seemed to work better for me. Youngest sister said Pepsi seemed to work for her also. Probably in our minds!
