Re: TV and Toddlers.

I definitely agree that TV should be limited for kids, and nonexistent for the little ones. Who wants to plop their 2-year-old in front of a tv anyway? I loved playing with my kids at that age--they were always right with me or their Dad.

As far as the simplistic conclusion that TV is to blame for bad test scores and obesity? More likely it's a lack of parental involvement that led to TV-As-Babysitter that's a culprit, among other guilty parties.

Precisely. In our area there are many poor performing schools with really bad test scores. These are in poorer neighborhoods and most are single parent homes. But......they want us to believe that throwing more at the schools will increase performance........
It's lack of parental involvement---my motto---kids copy parents---
My children wanted to learn how to read since that's what they saw me do---all the time

Whenever someone tells me , "my kids just don't like to read", the first ? in my mind is........have they seen you read for pleasure? (even a magazine)

I used to tell my kids to "stare at the television with unblinking eyes" when they were starting to fight or something.

My oldest son was one of the eight top math students in the state when he was in high school. My daughter scored in the 98 - 99th percentile in the ACT this year. My youngest son can explain exactly why the "Airbender" avatar is so powerful even when he's the smallest of the "benders."

I think I did at least "okay" with the t.v. thing. Oh! I've got the latest Stargate Universe on the DVR right now. BRB.
