Years ago, the democratic party was much more conservative and not at ALL reflected in the democratic party of today. So, I don't find it surprising that many older voters started out as registered democrats and switched to republican or independent along the way.
Currently I'm registered as "independent." I can't really support the republican party either. Like Sam said, though, their candidates are usually more conservative and therefore get my vote. I've voted for a couple of democrats--one being our current governor Brad Henry--but those votes are few and far between.
I really detest party loyalty. Every person should educate themselves on who the candidates are and vote accordingly.
However, if a person doesn't do research, I still consider a straight republican ticket to be the safest bet, when it comes to minimalist government.
Yeah, I voted for some dems for state legislature and local offices.
