Merry Mithra?

Mithra was the Indio/Persian god of light, born on what we call Dec 25th.

Many of his legends parallel what Christianity call Christ Mass.

Most non-Catholic theologians agree that Jesus could not of been born in December but most likely Sept or first week of Oct.

Does it bother anyone that the customs that Christianity calls Christ Mass is mainly pagan in origin, or is it just the tradition that matters?

Mat 15:3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

Just wondering.

Re: Merry Mithra?

Lots of our traditions are from pagan origins.

It's very deeply ingrained in our speech, days of the week, months of the year, foods, customs, etc. We don't have a whole lot of choice whenever we use a calendar, reference a day and date, etc.

It is an American custom to celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25 so we do it with a different attitude than those around us. Our children and our grand children know about the birth of Jesus and the real meaning of Christmas. And we all enjoy giving and receiving gifts, putting up a CHRISTmas tree, getting together, etc.

This is a picture of me from the Church play this year. I played a grandfather who read the real Christmas story from the Bible.

We have no choice concering our speech, days of the week, months and such customs. We DO have a choice whether to perpetuate a falsehood concerning Yeshua Messiah. I opted out in 1976.

Prove everything you said. Just saying it is so does not make it so.

Folks don't care, it's a sacred cow for sure. When something is fun involving children/family with an emotional fuzzy feeling then you can forget someone accepting the truth about it.

Re: Merry Mithra?

A CHRISTmas tree? What does it have a little nativity on it???? I know the origins of Christmas but I would never equate the tree with Christ. Its just a tradition. I would never try to defend it with Bible. It just does not compute. I however am not so hard nosed that I shove my decisions down the throat of another but I am not going to try and say the tree is about Jesus. Its about an atmosphere for having a party. Women especially like to decorate their houses. Now a Nativity is much different. Those always remind me of the birth of Jesus not the tree. Trees remind me of gifts and gifts remind me of family. Thats my take.

You have a point, all hese trees. lights, decor and materialism is not really about Christ but about themselves.

Re: Merry Mithra?

We celebrate Christmas and we believe in Santa Claus
but Jesus is the reason for the season.

This is one of my grandchildren (age 3) on Christmas Eve (last night) looking at the manger scene.

This actually was not posed.

Re: Merry Mithra?

I take issue with Santa Claus because his characteristics and abilities are an attempt to put in him on an equal status with Jesus Christ. Seriously, Santa Clause knows when you're sleeping, when you're awake, when you're good, when you're bad. Jesus Christ is all knowing. If that is not trying to equate with Christ then what is?! I find it sickening and truly do wonder how people go along with this. In remembrance of Christ I take communion. This has nothing to do with Jesus Christ and people truly need to stop trying to attach Christ to this celebration.

I agree that this celebration is a sacred cow to people. I honestly don't think that people care about the truth; they love their tradition much more.

That is correct we as people do have a choice of perpetuating something that is false.

Christmas is not an American custom; it did not originate in America. There are many in America that celebrate Christmas and do not even believe in Jesus Christ, let alone have never stepped foot into any church. Many of these people take the Lord's name in vain. Anyone's children that believe that Christmas is about Jesus Christ have and are being taught a lie. Therefore they do not know the real meaning of Christmas. There is nothing wrong in giving gifts to other people. I enjoy giving gifts to others, but I do not do so under false pretenses. Giving gifts to others does not in any way honor or show remembrance of Christ's birth. Santa Claus came from St. Nicholas who was a patron saint; who had a day called Saint Nicholas Day. I wonder how many who celebrate Christmas teach their children to say this poem "Saint Nicholas, my dear good friend! To serve you ever was my end, If you will, now, me something give, I'll serve you ever while I live".

My question to those that do celebrate Christmas and proclaim to be Christians is this. Why mesh putting up lights, trees, etc with remembering the birth of Jesus Christ? Why not do so at any other time of the year? Why go along with the lie?
